See other threads - taken us seven months so far. No end in sight.

It usually depends on the CRB. I think the absolute minimum it's ever taken anyone is a month. The longest.....well....

Does anyone know why their application was faster or slower?

Xena, the other thread I'm on re this here has some detail on our process.

As to exactly why, though - I think we applied (last summer) at a bad time in terms of luck - it was just when they were withdrawing one version of the application form, with its associated process, and replacing that with another (a change, by the way, which was completely unannounced), so our nanny's application was on the "old" form and they didn't know how to handle that within the revised process.

Expanding from that, I would say that having anything in the application which is not absolutely straightforward - a CRB-type-check needed from outside the UK, childcare qualifications which are not absolutely the commonest, a first aid cert which is nearing expiry - will add weeks. The teams working on the registrations are "tick the box" people - if they can't instantly do the tick, you go into limbo.
