I know it is a while away, but my son is due to start school in September but i work 8am until 4.30 everyday and will need a childminder for afterschool. How does this work and what is the going rate for afterschool minders? He is currently in Nursery full time, but i want to start arranging this soon..

Any advice/help would be appriciated!!

first port of call is contact the school and ask them if they have a list of cms that go to that school for pick ups / drop offs. ifthey haven't you'll have to trawl the childrens information service website for cms - they usually list which school they go to. also phone the council for an up to date list (not every cm is on the web. if you live near a childrens centre they may well have a cm drop in group that yo ucould go to and meet cms.

then you start phoning / emailing for vacancies and arranging visits.

what you'll looking for is part of the norm for most cms. do you need before school care and school holiday cover? cms will either charge per hour or a set fee for before and after school and then per hour for school holidays. you are likely to pay anything from £3 per hour. you also need to consider the inset days aswell - will you need cover?

it usually takes about 6-8wks to find a cm you are happy with but as you are looking for the busiest changeover then you may need to consider booking and paying a retainer until then.

another option is asking the school what wrap around care they offer (if they do).

now that was long! oh, I'm not a cm but have sent my dcs for the last 5yrs!
