had a lady come to look around she wants 2 days from me (i used to have her dd when her other cm was on holiday) and she has found a lovely cm nr where she lives for the other 3 days (as she wants her dd to be nr children she will go to school with) the cm lives on a farm with sheep, cows etc
when we were talking she mentioned that the other cm wasnt registered and asked what it meant
i told her and she said she didnt realise as half the childminders in her village were not reg and she just thought a cm could opp in or out

how can we make parents more aware?? i have posted on my local netmums (didnt menion the village but just asked parents to be aware)

the only people I know who CM but not registered are winding up ie about to retire & will then have their child for less than 2 hours a day type of thing. I know of them, but these was some time ago so they are now no longer CMing IYSWIM

I would have thought with all the publicity that has been around that all parents should be aware of the registered/not registered advice.

I am shocked that she would casually mention this, and ask you for more details.

i know and mum is a maths teacher so knows all about ofsted and inspections she just thought you could opp out if you wanted which meant you didnt have to do the paperwork!!!!

People are very unaware of the legalities of non registered childcare, there really should be more information about it in any childcare information I think.

There have been so many threads on here where it has had to be explained.

I have had a mum ask me how much I charge so she can charge her friend about the same! [anger]

It is worrying I think how unaware people are of the risks.

That's so annoying!!! when you think about all the hard work we put in (not to mention £££) just to keep Ofsted happy.
Apart from that, if I was going to leave my DCs with anyone they'd hae to prove they wre Mary Poppins with paperwork first (not too protective, just come across way too mant poor child carers).
I had a very well educated pp who I had to practically force to look at my registration, it beggars belief!

We must live in the same village, as there are two, maybe three who are unregistered CM's where I live.

What makes me really annoyed is that all OFsted do is send them a letter asking them are they childminders!

I'm surrounded by people like that in my area.
One day the school had a power cut and one of the teachers said "Pity X can't have them all to look after" I was a bit shocked, most people think she is a proper CM as she looks after a little boy for a couple of days and gets paid, but she says that she would deny it was a regular thing and just say she was helping out.
But the very worst thing was our new pre-school leader was told WRONGLY be someone else on the committee that X was qualified so one day she and the assistant were in charge of 10 kids.
There was an incident with a child and some marbles (don't know where they came from) and one of the parent helpers had to stop the child from chocking.
It turned out that the pre-school assistant's 1st aid had lapsed anyway, the parent helper just knew basic stuff and the lady X had no 1st aid WHATSOEVER.
After this incident the parent helper actually withdrew their child and we have politely told X that she can't help out anymore (she used to get paid).
But all the other issues have now been sorted (new 1st aid cert for assistant) and we have a spare person in the form of a nanny who has grade 4 qualifications, who can come at anytime.
But it was a close call that day!
The reason she does not get registered is basically to do with her husband (dodgy) and the fact she can't use her garden (too steep). But you'd think she would at least take a 1st aid course for peace of mind.
