Covering for a friend today - 12 hour shift 2pm-2am. Children will go to sleep about 7.30. They sleep in different rooms and ive not to check on them as they are very light sleepers. The parents have told me to bring my own laptop/use their computer and releax watching tv. Although aparently I should be minding them at all times...ideas please?

Surely minding them just means going to them if they wake/cry?

saltire · 15/11/2008 13:06

Well, obviously you shall need a mirror, and a long broom handle so you can sit on the landing - not reading mind you becasue that will distract from minding them, and use the mirror on the end of the brush to peek in their rooms. At least every 5 seconds

i am with GK just have an ear out for them, tv not on too loud and being there ready for them is perfectly ok.

I check on current children who are 8.5m and 20m every hour or so, more if i hear a noise, as both can get into weird sleeping positions and 20m has recently learnt to climb out of his cot.

MatNanPlus · 15/11/2008 13:08

As to what 5C others deem appropriate is anyones guess

saltire · 15/11/2008 13:10

and of course you shall need a bucket, to pee in!

giraffescantdancethetango · 15/11/2008 13:12

I was thinking of setting up webcams in both rooms? but the tv is downstairs...would being a whole floor away endanger them?

Blondeshavemorefun · 15/11/2008 13:18

well OBVIOUSLY you need to stay excalty in the middle of BOTH rooms

and a mirror on a long handle broom sounds fine to me

or

you can do as most normal parents expect and sit on yor bum, watch tv and check on them every now and again by listening at door ( as light sleepers)

StealthPolarBear · 15/11/2008 13:22

giraffes
It's just not worth it, have them sleep in the same room. You can lie in the doorway with your head in the room - maybe disguised as a potted plant so as not to let on. Obviously make sure the foliage doesn't obstruct your view. I have a plastic parrot you can borrow if you think it would add to the authenticity?
Make sure your friend pops home for 5 mins every 2 hours to give you a break / let you use the loo etc.

giraffescantdancethetango · 15/11/2008 13:32

Well they are going over 4 hours away as they are in a show which is touring...so am going to just not drink for 12 hours and wear an extra large tena for any leakage.

Blondes sorry but sitting on bum sounds really negligent

Yes please can I borrow parrot? Do you also have a parrot shaped note book to record breathing?

Blondeshavemorefun · 15/11/2008 13:35

well im sitting ob my bum at moment

so sue me!!

StealthPolarBear · 15/11/2008 13:37

That's her problem to sort out.
Parrot will be sent by urgent same day mail right now - don't have a notebook sorry, but are you not going to have a dictaphone in there so you can record their breathing and analyse it when you're safely on your own again? You know, number of breaths per minute, outliers, deep/shallow ratio etc

LOL at this thread.

I'm babysitting tonight... let me see, I'll be watching utter rubbish on Sky I expect (unless there is a good film on)... making a cup of coffee... and if LO wakes, I shall of course tend to his every need.
Can't mumsnet while I'm there though, in a poor G3 signal strength area.

looneytune · 15/11/2008 15:19

I did pretty much this thread in chat yesterday about me having overnighters. I was relieved to see that I AM actually allowed to sleep , not quite sure what 5C would think of that though!!!!

StealthPolarBear · 15/11/2008 16:03
