Prepaid card/nanny expenses system

Does anyone have a clever/recommended system for how you deal with the monthly expenses for a nanny? I had thought a prepaid cash card would be good but note that almost nowhere seems to offer them anymore. Ideally I would like to be able to see individual expenses as they are spent so I have an idea how the month is going (last months cost a bit of a shock!). Do you give them a debit card in your name (seems risky!)??

Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

I have a Starling card and you can get separate cards for example you could designate one for Nanny and transfer over however much as necessary. You would get an alert for anytime they use the card and see how much/where they have used it

Couldn’t you just do the same as most older kids have and set up a debit card? We did Hyperjar with mine from
9 or so and once my daughter was old enough we just got her a debit card via our bank and transfer her pocket money over. If you have an agreement on monthly costs just move that over at the start of the month?

Thank you! That’s one of the few banks I haven’t looked at. A shame Monzo don’t do it as well

Can’t do this unfortunately as children under the age banks require and so I can’t set up an account for them/their nanny

Yes - just set up a wise card and put some money on it.

You need to be very careful and set up spending limits on it or they will take the mickey. Have a tin for receipts.

Hyperjar

Thank you so much all. Like the tin for receipts. A shame can’t do Monzo as I know can take pics of receipts in it and load onto it too

I gave my nanny a Monzo card in my name and I just top it up £50 a week or so via the app on my phone. You get automatic alerts every time a transaction is made and I don’t use the card myself so it’s easy to keep track of what is being spent.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 08/10/2026 16:44

Would Revolut work for you?
You put money on it and every transaction is sent to your phone.

Edit: actually maybe not, as it is linked to your bank account and they may be able to 'top it up' themselves!

I just give my nanny my debit card, and I get an alert every time she spends money on it.

Granted with hindsight it seems risky but we’ve had her for years and never had any issues at all. She provides paper receipts

I have a second card on my credit card that my carer uses. It has a low credit limit so if he did run up a bill it wouldn't break the bank.

Oh the card is Luma/Capital one.
