Should I get a male au pair?

We have 3 boys who have got to the football stage. I wonder if a male au pair would be a good idea, but dh hates the very thought. We don't need housework, just competent and animated babysitting.

Any experiences?

Don't assume that being male means that they like football.
If ability to play football is a requirement of the job, then make that clear in advert, and see what you get..

yes,... it really depends what sort of help you need and on the person but I had a very bad experience with a MAP. He couldn't clean, cook, take any responsibility or play football. My fault really though in retrospect. He was only 19 and an adored only child, I should have guessed what he'd be like. Don't get me wrong, he was a lovely boy, just no help whatsoever. I wouldn't try a MAP again whilst my dc's are under 10.

Male aupair a fab idea - worked well in practice chez quattro - much better all round - no fits of temperament - gets on well with everyone - why does your dh hate the thought? No need to feel threatened.

Of course not all boys play football, but my boys have definitely got a boy edge to their games now they're not tiny any more, so I think there could be mileage in looking for someone who actually likes football, which is a lot more likely to mean a bloke.

I think dh just finds women more decorous really. I'll have another word with him.

Have had 4 MAPs, all except the last one were good at football. Like ingles2, feel to blame as didn't actually ask how his game playing skills were at interview stage, just assumed. He couldn't cook either. We had a Czech MAP who'd done national service and his driving and cleaning skills were very good. As with the girls, they are all individuals. My DH hates MAPs, not threatened, just feels you'd have to be a pretty weird sort of bloke to want to do the job - and they're living in your house.
