Can you please help. I've decided to look for a childminder for a year after having a nanny for the past 5.

I need childcare between 9 - 12. My ds2 will then go to part-time nursery until 3.15. I need the childmminder to pick him up from school and look after him until 4.

Will I have to pay for the time in between? I will be the first port of call in an emergency and can collect him from school if ill etc.

What is the average hourly rate for a childminder (Cardiff, Wales) ?

normally yes you may have to pay in between

cm dont normally pick up sick children from nursery as they have other children from different familys to look after and school runs to do etc

Who will be looking after your DS in the holidays? or teacher training days? if it's you, then you ^might find a childminder who doesn't charge

But it's definitely the norm to charge

I'm a teacher so no worries in the holidays and my mum can do the odd teacher training day.

Most childminders will charge & you may also struggle not paying in the holidays tbh - I would certainly charge - although I can think of one or two childminders who wouldn't

Think of it like gym subscription - you have to pay even if you don't use it

deff didnt use my gym membership

some cm (like me) love term time only children and dont charge in the hols but might charge while child is in pre-school

best to look around and ask

i dont charge as there is a q of people wanting childcare for holidays only

You would probably have to pay for a full day because your ds would be taking an under 5 place. Fees would be about £4 an hour, but I would just ring around and enquire, because it can vary.
You can get a list of Cardiff childminders from the children's information service, 029 20520100.
