I paid my todlers childcare worker her money before I go to work I came home yesterday and the house was wrecked there was paint on the walls and floors and playdough stuck to the carpet. The childcarebworker was upset and said my toddler had hit her.I have cameras in my living room you know the baby ones and my childcare worker had encouraged my daughter to paint on my walls thinking the wallpaper was Paper!

Is it the first time she was left with your child?

EbbandTheWanderingHearts · 06/08/2024 20:13

Are you in the UK? Your nanny allowed your toddler to paint on your walls? Is she really young? I can't imagine anyone doing that!

theeyeofdoe · 06/08/2024 21:18

If you’re in the UK and have a nanny, you are her employer and should not be paying cash in hand - it’s illegal.

givemushypeasachance · 07/08/2024 13:32

And does this person know you have cameras on to monitor her work.

Are you sure about that? I thought cash was fine to pay an employee.

GoldenPombear · 07/08/2024 13:55

You can pay in cash as long as it's reported to hmrc and all benefits - holiday ssp pension etc are paid appropriately

How are cash payments illegal? Explain exactly how cash payments are illegal. Have you ever used cash in a shop? Was that illegal. Used a cleaner and paid cash? Window cleaner? Any service at all? Was that illegal.

There is nothing illegal about paying in cash. I am self employed. I am paid in cash as well as card. It all goes through my books and is all reported to HMRC.

Why do you assume that self employed people are all tax dodgers? And if we are given cash then we are going to hide it? Do you think that about Tesco?

oh, and as an employee, you can be paid in cash. I worked in a chip shop as a teen and was paid in cash with a payslip showing NI and all the rest of it. It was all above board but the business used cash so they paid in cash. Absolutely nothing illegal about it.

I wish idiots with no clue just wouldn’t post.

mitogoshi · 07/08/2024 14:25

You can pay in cash but it has to be fully reported including tax withheld and ni paid

Peonies12 · 07/08/2024 14:25

I'm far more concerned you have cameras in the house, I hope the nanny is fully aware and has consented to this. if not, she'd have serious grounds for claiming illegal surveillance by her employer. And you know anyone can hack those cameras and watch your kid.

Blondeshavemorefun · 07/08/2024 18:37

Why do you call her a childcare worker

Rather than a nanny ?

Cash is fine as long as you are paying her tax and ni from her gross wage

How old is this person and what quals ?

I can't imagine any qualified nanny saying lets pain in the walls

Blondeshavemorefun · 07/08/2024 18:38

Cameras are fine but the nanny needs to be told about them

Unless you're using her as a very ad hoc childcare solution, she cannot be self-employed. It's not a choice thing, employment status is determined by HMRC.

If you are paying her correctly, then of course you can pay her cash, but you still need to ensure that you have registered as an employer and are paying NI and her tax - which you obviously can't pay in cash!

Exactly

Is this a child care professional or a teen babysitting for the summer? Are they aware of the cameras?

If they are coming back you need to sit down and lay out some rules. Like no painting on walls, using play dough only in kitchen etc
