nannynick · 13/03/2008 07:26

I tried making hot cross buns a couple of weeks back, failed miserably. Mind you, most things I try to make which involve using yeast seem to fail - think the oven at work may not be very good at getting to the right temperature, plus no where in the house to prove things in a decent amount of time. So, good luck with the hot cross buns, hope they turn out better than mine did.
Being Thursday, I'm off walking in Windsor Great Park - as long as it isn't too windy. Looks reasonable so far.

KatyMac · 13/03/2008 07:45

Last day of my ILM course today
We are doing a presentation
I hope it goes well - I can't tell you about it because it is a surprise for the other students & staff (well they might be lurking)

southernbelle77 · 13/03/2008 08:34

Morning! 8am mindee not turned up yet! Wondering if they are coming or not.

I want to make hot cross buns but need to find a decent recipe so if anyone has one, pass it this way, thanks

Hope ds is ok today Kay and you are able to work with no problems.

EM, I hope the pains go today and that you are ok.

Crace, let me know how your hot cross buns go! Then I might nick your recipe!

Have a nice walk today Nick.

Oh, mindee just turned up now! Sat at table with dd colouring nice and quietly! Well, quietly for a 2 and a 3 year old

southernbelle77 · 13/03/2008 08:36

Oh sorry, Katy, hope your course goes well today!

crace · 13/03/2008 08:38

Nick, I must admit something... we are using the bread machine to do the hard work. There I said it. The kids will measure out each ingredient and we will talk about it etc and then 2 hours of mixing and rising in the bread machine. We will be making them into rolls and crossing them and cooking in the oven though! {guilty emoticon} But as an aside, you need to be careful what yeast you buy. Hovis sachets are useless and room temp yeast works better than cold. Also using warm water with it tends to help.

EM - great news. I think its probably that, but it doesn't hurt to check it out.

Good luck Katy! Fingers crossed for you.

eleanorsmum · 13/03/2008 08:57

ooooh i have a read machine and never thought about using it for hot cross buns! how fab would that be! they'd love it i'm sure! recipie please!

MaureenMLove · 13/03/2008 09:31

Morning all! All this talk of hot cross buns! I can smell hot cross buns baking all year round! We live round the corner from a bakery and there is just the perfect strength of smell most days! Strange that we can only ever smell hot cross buns though, never just bread.

Good luck to all you amateur bakers today and good luck Katy with your presentation. I'm off to finish painting DD's doll house. Its very fiddly though. Imagine, the window frames are 1/12th the size of real life, but my hands & paint brushes aren't!

Saz73 · 13/03/2008 10:21

Hello, really need some advice and encouragement. I have a 19mth with D&V, parent didn't tell me aboutthis until she was getting in her car and it was a 'oh thought I would mention he was sick 3 times last night and has runny nappies', before I could say anthing she had gone. Also, 10mth has had runny nappies for approx 4 days now. Should i send home, keep and what's everyones rules, both children are ok in them selves??

looneytune · 13/03/2008 10:25

just about to go to group but came on very quickly whilst babies napping....saz....deffo send home. I have a Health Authority list laminated and on my wall in the porch to remind parents plus if you let them get away with it, they will keep taking the mick (like the mum of the sisters I used to have). Doesn't matter if they are ok in themselves. Policies are policies and this is one thing we should all be very strict with as puts others at risk! Plus I know you've already been poorly yourself recently so you don't want to get ill again do you!!

sorry, must dash, hi everyone else

MaureenMLove · 13/03/2008 10:30

Send home Saz! Both of them. Exclude for 48 hrs. I think its 48 hrs now and not 24hr. Anyone want to confirm that?

THEN, kick your shoes off, relax in the knowledge that you're still getting paid and the weekend starts here for you!

Saz73 · 13/03/2008 10:34

Sounds good, but got a abbreviated EYFS Part 1 training tonight so should really be making the effort to look through the folder!!! Has anyone got a link to the list of illness LT is referring to. Use to have a copy but my filing system is SO good, i can't find it.

Would you even send the 10mth home, I know he's had runny nappies all week.

BoysAreLikeDogs · 13/03/2008 10:46

Hi all I've had the dreaded D and V so not been around.

Saz,Send them both home, infection control means they should not be with you, 48 hrs.

Saz73 · 13/03/2008 10:57

Made the phone calls, one's on her way back from London and the others on his way. Done a quick memo and printed a copy of the HPA's advice leaflet indicating the infection control times. Let's see what they say when they get here!

crace · 13/03/2008 11:05

How cheeky! Glad you sent them home, our family got really sick from a baby with D one time, I won't be lenient on that again.

EM - will get you the recipe

Hi boys and Mo and LT! Hope you are all having nice days.

After another late night with work DH slept in, and hooray so did dd, they were cuddled up together when I left bed. DD slept to 8am today and is in a great mood for it. Hooray!

Our HCB (hot cross buns teehee) are now proving and we've had a great time making them. Painting on the flour cross was the messiest most fun.

MaureenMLove · 13/03/2008 11:26

I'm taking five! I've finished painting the front of the house, done all the fine glossing on the windows and door and I've just made 5 pairs (yes, five pairs!) of curtains! It looks fab. I might even take a picture for you tomorrow. The gloss won't be dry til tomorrow!

Now I've got to sterlize bottles for wine bottling tonight! What will I do when I have to work out of the home til 3 every day!

ROSEgarden · 13/03/2008 11:36

Lunch has finished and now both mindee are asleep, time for a coffee I think.
We have been to an ncma play morning at 1 of the local childrens centres, got covered in glue and paint again

I have to cheat and go and buy hot cross buns as my cooking isn't that great, I can just about make fairy cakes but some do get burnt. I'm glad DH didn't marry me for my cooking skills

crace · 13/03/2008 13:31

The HCB came out fabulous!

EM the recipe using a bread machine:

1/2 tsp yeast
250g strong white flour
1 tsp sugar
25g butter
1/2 tsp salt
1 med egg
100 ml water

Set on Raisin dough program (ours is 2 hours 20 mins)

Put 100g mixed dried fruit in fruit dispenser (but if yours doesn't have one, the fruit dropped in 1/2 way through).

Heat oven to 220c

After bread machine has done its thing, divide into eight balls and place on lightly greased tray. All to prove.

Make a paste with 2 tbsp flour and 2 tbsp water and pipe a cross over the buns.

Bake at 220 for 15-20 mins. (it was more like 15 mins

While still HOT, brush with sugar glaze, 40g sugar in 4 tbsp water and boiled until syrup is reached (about 5 mins)

They came out fab, and are so yummy
