Obtaining an enhanced DBS check for potential after school nanny

Looking at hiring an after school nanny for when my DS starts reception in September. We've found a good candidate on childcare.co.uk and we're starting to work through a list of checks, one of which is an enhanced DBS check. The nanny has provided her most recent certificate but it's dated 2019 so 4 years old now which means we should almost definitely request a more recent one correct?

How do we obtain a new enhanced DBS check if the nanny is neither registered with Ofsted or a nanny agency as this website suggests they need to be: https://tinyurl.com/2jcjh9sz ?

Is our only option to insist the nanny registers with Ofsted so an up to date enhanced DBS check can be produced? Or are there other ways?

What is the Process for Nannies to get Enhanced DBS Checks?

Enhanced DBS checks must be obtained by Nannies to work with children, but individuals can only apply for Basic DBS checks. So how do they get an Enhanced DBS?

If they create an ArmyOfNannies profile they can obtain one from there: www.armyofnannies.com/blog/enhanced-dbs-checks-with-personnel-checks

Another way is to start the Ofsted application process but just do the Enhanced DBS part: ofsteddbsapplication.co.uk

Ask her if she's on the update service. If she is then you can look her up online.

Thanks but we require an enhanced check, not a basic check.

You can look up an enhanced DBS check online if she’s on the update service, it’s different to the basic ones. Look on the gov.uk website under ‘enhanced dbs checks’

Does she not have the iodate service

My certificate was 13yrs old till I redid as got married

But I was on the yearly update

If she signed up to the DBS Update Service when she first got her DBS, then you can check that and she doesn’t need a new one.

Otherwise a local nanny agency will often offer this as a standalone service for a fee, if you ask them.

You can apply through Ofsted without going through with the whole registration process. Ofsted will be cheapest.

There is no benefit to a nanny in being Ofsted Registered, it purely benefits the parents who can use Tax Free Childcare or vouchers .
if you wish your nanny to be Ofsted Registered you will need to cover the cost of :
Registration with Ofsted - £103 every year
Paediatric First Aid - @£90 every three years - although she may have this.
Safeguarding Course - costs vary depends on local authority but needs to be renewed every two to three years.
As an Ofsted nanny she will be obliged by Ofsted to complete a risk assessment of your home and give you written requirements to ensure your home is safe.
She is obliged to report any safeguarding concerns to local social services and Ofsted .
She may be inspected and Ofsted wull
ask to visit her and observe her care of your children and ask her safeguarding questions - usually quite an intense visit.
oh and yes you will need to pay for a DBS that she will need to put on the update service . Cost of DBS @ £60

  • update service £13 a year.
  • The nanny will also need public liability insurance to register with Ofsted and she will have to pay this herself - others wise if you sue her it is invalid. Cost @£70.
Do you really need her to be Ofsted Registered for an after school job . Much easier to pay for a DBS via a local nanny agency. While you are considering cost do ensure you have insurance for staff in your home , check with your home insurance company . A friend s nanny fell over loose stair carpet and broke her leg . It cost them a fortune as the nanny had insurance and took them to court .

Rubbish Ofsted is not cheaper see my post above

cyncope · 30/07/2023 19:40

Applying for the DBS with Ofsted is cheapest. You don't need to go through with the registration.
