Babysitter rate of pay

Just wondering what people pay teenage babysitters - my daughter is looking to earn some pennies she is a very mature 15 year old who is saving towards attending medical school.

Due to being only 15 she cannot have a DBS check but does have references from a children’s charity that she volunteers for and another family that she has baby sat for. Also has references from St John’s Ambulance where she volunteers as an operation cadet first aider and holds a 48 hour first aid qualification (the one that St John’s use for all their events volunteers) and then a 12 hour paediatric one, safeguarding, food hygiene and a basic level 2 youth work qualification that the council were running awhile back.

The lady who has asked her to baby sit is a neighbour so I am literally next door should there be a reason she needs me and the child is early primary school aged looking at adhoc over the school holidays and also adhoc evenings all of which are fine just wondering what is appropriate for her to charge - it might be irrelevant as the lady might have a price in mind but what level is appropriate for a 15 year old to be charging?

We used to give £10 an hour about two years ago to our 14 year old neighbour

Rainbowsandmiracles · 17/07/2023 19:25

Thanks that’s really helpful she was looking at £5 an hour to tie in with min wage type levels

I pay my neighbours 15yr old £20 for 1945-2200 on a Monday in very similar circumstances.

We pay £40 per evening plus snacks and Wi-Fi access.

Surely wifi access is just included without making it a thing?

Dd has just started, she's 14 and is charging £5. Neighbours only, so I'm right here. She has no first aid or anything.

@Rolypolyup

Indeed but I lead with that. It seems more important than the rate of pay!

Rainbowsandmiracles · 17/07/2023 21:56

Lol with it being next door I suspect she would still be using ours 😂 but good to know I’ll get her to chat to them about that

We have lived here a couple of years but do not really know them but I thought about the £5 mark but a lady I work with told me she pays £8-10 hence heading here for advice :)

dd (16) got paid £5 ph in a cafe and recently neighbours paid her £7 ph for 4 hours’ babysitting. £10 ph seems a lot to me!

Eeek £7 for 4 hours seems very low bless her, we are going to see what the lady suggests and take it from there but in her head she’s going in with anything £5 or over and increasing in the evenings (or £5 with something yummy to eat)

I am amazed at those who pay a teenager who has no first aid - dbs - pli or childcare quals £10ph

£5 is plenty for a teen with none of the above to watch tv

Compared to them working washing pots for example

If paying double that then go for a qualified nanny

caringcarer · 18/07/2023 20:57

I'd offer £7 per hour with her qualifications. I used to use an A level student who sat and did all her homework while my kids slept. I put them to bed before she arrived and they never woke up. She lived 3 doors from me and used to feed my cats and water my tomato plants too when I went on holiday too. I was quite sorry when she went off to Uni.
