Registered Places Report - Dec 2007

At 31 Dec 2007, Ofsted reported there were 65,776 childminders providing 302,300 childcare places.
If NCMA's membership is 47,000... then they are representing around 71%. Who represents the rest?

There has been a drop in the number of childminders. December 2006 report, gives the following figures:
Providers = 71,500 Places = 323,600

So over a 1 year period, there was a loss of 5724 childminders, a loss of 21300 childcare places.

In the same period, taking account of all Ofsted registered providers, the number of childcare places was:
1549000 in 2007, 1566500 in 2006. A LOSS of 17,500 Childcare Places.

I thought our Government was supposed to be increasing the number of childcare places... not decreasing them!

Interesting Nick, thanks for posting this, just goes to show they aren't really helping us are they. See what happens next year when the fees go up!

Many minders in an area close to me are stuggling to fill spaces, many are long term, well qualified accredited network minders with good and outstanding reports as they have too much in the area, so funding may well be cut for new childcare places in that area, as it not just about places but sustainability.
thanks for the info

Funny that isn't it....could it be to do with the start of OFSTED by chance?

Up until December 2006, the figures provided by Ofsted are always multiples of 100 which makes it look like there is some rounding going on. From March 2007 through to March 2008 this is not the case so it looks like Ofsted have published actual figures. However, the figures for June 2008 are all multiples of 100 and look like Ofsted have started rounding again. So, which way did they round the numbers and do the real numbers show an even greater fall in the number of childminders?

One thing is for sure, though: The figures for September 2008 will show an even bigger fall as the CMs who have decided not to work under EYFS finally give up.

Childminders round here are desperate for children & they are still recruiting.......
