Child maintenance on behalf of partner

Not sure if anyone knows or been through the same but here it goes, does anyone know if you can get a backdate on child maintenance?
My partner got a letter at the beginning of the year to say how much he had to pay for his son and was wayyy more than he was originally paying but didn't understand why but as it was a statement he accepted it. Anyways up to now he's put our son on it and his ex partner accepted only for it to go down a tiny bit which is fine but it's still questionable why it's so much still when he's on a low wage so I said to him ring them which he exactly done. To their understanding we don't have his son when we have him 3 nights a week! And have been all through out the 2 years!! Now would that mean his ex needs to pay him back the overpayment?! Hes told them that he has his son 3 nights a week and they said they have tried to get intouch with his ex to confirm which she still hasn't and shes claiming she's got nothing from them?.
