CM CLUB: Advertising Tips - Google Maps

Today I have noticed something new that Google seems to be doing.

If you search google using the phrase
"babysitting service woking"
without the quotes - with luck you will see what I am seeing, which is a MAP of where I am located.

Not sure if Google does this every time, or just if you happen to be using a certain Google data center (they have many around the globe).

This could be a new way of advertising. I had an enquiry this evening which came via a search which resulted in the map being displayed. So it does seem to work - alas in the particular case the family lived in an area I don't provide childcare in, so while the system works, it isn't perfect.

Rather worryingly I'm not top when you google C/Ming & my village

looneytune · 14/01/2008 21:48

Yippee I'm on and at top!!

MaureenMLove · 14/01/2008 21:53

What did you put in Looney, I'm drawing a blank.

looneytune · 14/01/2008 21:58

I didn't use the link, just went into www.google.co.uk, clicked on 'maps' on top left link here and went into 'find businesses' - It may not have been the same as Nick was talking about?

KatyMac · 14/01/2008 22:00

Oh poo - I'm not there at all

How do I fix that Nick?

MaureenMLove · 14/01/2008 22:01

Oh OK! I found Nicks gaff!

nannynick · 14/01/2008 22:01

Not quite what I was meaning Looney

try this link - do you see a map?

Katymac... create a Google Maps Business Listing (see link in first post). Then eventually, Google may decide that it will show a map for search queries.

KatyMac · 14/01/2008 22:04

Does it cost?

MaureenMLove · 14/01/2008 22:05

Nah, I'm not there either, Not under best most wonderful childminder in the borough, anyway!

looneytune · 14/01/2008 22:06
  • pregnancy brain again! lol No map for me then, still, I liked the other one as I didn't know about it so I learnt something new anyway so thanks Also, I'm only about 7th in the WHOLE town lol. Will look at other listing too, thanks
nannynick · 14/01/2008 22:06

Don't think there is a cost, I certainly can't recall paying.

OP posts:
KatyMac · 14/01/2008 22:15

But they don't list Childminders (or babysitters) I have to be "Day care centres & nurseries"

Hmm Am I? A "Day care centres & nurseries" I mean?

nannynick · 14/01/2008 22:29

Just looking at my listing, and I've not got any category showing - I created my listing some time ago, don't think categories existed then. Try seeing if it will let you leave that blank.

I found Nick by his link and then I followed Looney idea. I looked under businesses and put in Childminders in 'my town' It lists lots of cm's in this borough, but none in my town.

KatyMac · 14/01/2008 22:32

I think we might be a day care centre (childminding is covered by the day-care standards isn't it?)

BTW - no cost

Am I there yet?? it says it will take 4 weeks

looneytune · 14/01/2008 23:39

Yeah Katy, I'd say so. I'm only a single childminder yet have registered on Yell or something like that as 'Daycare' as that's what I provide. Doesn't say centre or anything but I doubt that matters

ayla99 · 15/01/2008 22:34

I can't create a listing. I told it I'm in UK but it still wants a US state, postcode & phone number

ayla99 · 15/01/2008 22:37

Just tried again and it now lets me put in my uk postcode . No idea why it didn't work before.

looneytune · 15/01/2008 23:02

Cheers for that Nick, all done and verified so got to wait 4 weeks now. I think this is another one to add to the Advertising Tips thread although I'm off to bed now as it's late for me these days!
