So I'm having a look on nannyjob, prior to putting my advert on. What's the deal with net pay being quoted everywhere?

Seriously? I have seen on here nannies and others saying it's best to recruit on the basis of gross pay, like any other employee, but looking at nannyjob through the ads before I put mine on, they all seem to be advertising a 'net' rate.

I was planning to put a gross salary, obviously candidates might have all sorts of different tax code situations and their tax will be deducted for them from their pay so I really don't get this net pay business.

However I am new to employing nannies and I am prepared to be educated, but I need to know is my advert going to be shunned if I don't put a net rate?

Give both. Say it's £x gross (assuming normal tax code this works out as £y net)

OR advertise as net and put gross pay in the contract, which is what most people do.

I have no idea why people do it - it's just a convention that's sprung up.

Blimey. I was hoping not to have to worry about doing tax calculations just to have to advertise. Will do it though, if that's what everyone else does.

thanks

Just plug in what you want to pay gross into a tax calculator and it does it for you

flowerybeanbag · 14/01/2008 20:08

Aha

oh yes

i know exactly what i want net.... but insist on gross being in contract

this is what all of my nanny friends do / expect as well

flowerybeanbag · 14/01/2008 20:15

FGS.

I have never in my life had the first clue what I have been earning net! You nannies are a savvy bunch!

Anyone want to work for me?

Net pay in the Domestic Servant industry is a pain and is alas historic. Many of us are trying to get more employers and agencies to only advertised Gross wages, but it's not a lot of impact.

Thus for now, give the Gross Wage and say what that is roughly NET for someone on a standard tax code. ListenToTaxman will do Gross to Net calculation.

Millarkie · 14/01/2008 20:42

I put gross pay in ads (or something like 'good rate of pay' if the pay will depend on nanny's experience etc) but follow it with (XXX net approx). I don't like doing a direct net- gross conversion in case nanny has complicated tax issues.
Always use gross in contract.

Try the nannypaye.co.uk website - they have a table with the net/gross weekly pay conversion, and nannytax.co.uk had a calculator style converter.

Are you in South Cambs - I met a nice nanny looking for a job in South Cambs recently..could look for the details if you want.

Think that's a bit too north - she's looking south cambs/saffron walden area.
Remember to put an ad on gumtree.com/cambridge too.. that's where we got our lovely school-holiday nanny from.

Good luck.
