I wonder if anyone can help - I am returning to study so won’t be eligible for TFC from sept, but am I right in thinking I can save it up while I am working, and still pay put from it, just not pay money in while I’m not earning?

Yes, at the next reconfirmation point after your income stops, you will fail to reconfirm, so your account will become Pay Only, so you can use it to pay for childcare but not add any more to the account.
