Hi, just looking for some opinions if possible. I am 22 wks pg and baby is due beginning of may. I currently have a 3 yr old son and have a 5 yr old after school mindee. My plan was to start my mat pay asap as my full time mindee has just left for starting nursery and i didn't really want to take on a new mindee with baby coming. I was planning to mind after shool child up to two weeks before baby is due and be back for the school hols (baby aprox 6wks). I had mindee for full day today and i am now starting to query my decision. I could potentially have 9 mths off and receive maternity allowance. Should i hand notice and take the easy route and only be £60 worse off a week for an easy life!? Sorry for rambling.

I would take the break tbh but it depends how much you will need the money. Check what allowances you will get before you make a decision.

Hi newcm, its really up to you, but if you can afford to take the 9 months off and want to, then I would go for it. I am a cm just coming to the end of my mat leave. I finished work one month before baby came, and start back next month, when he will be 8 months. My only regret and worry is that work in our area is now very short, and I have nothing lined up yet ! But I would not change a thing, my little boy is totally worth it, and the time has flown by. I'm glad I've had this time with him, and my other two kids, before I start minding again, as then you have to split yourself in all directions. But thats just my experience ! Good luck whatever you decide.

£60 IS a lot of money..BUT you and your health and that of your baby are more important..you have doubts after first day...do some serious thinking now..do you have asttling in period??

newcm · 27/12/2007 20:24

Will do, i was planning to go and check after the xmas break. I just feel that if i start back in june then i will have to stop the mat allowance and will therefore need a full time mindee to start straight after school hols when baby may only be 12 wks. I think i might be setting myself up for a long hard struggle! Also a bit worried as i have told mindees parents that i will be back for hols and feel like i would be letting them down.

I've had mindee since last june so well out of settling in period! It was just the first time in a while i have had mindee for full day. Work is already scarce here aswell so i might be pushing it to find soemone to start after the hols anyway!

I'm sure they'll understand if you sit them down and explain it to them once you have made your decision. I would have found it a struggle minding again when baby is that young. I felt like I really needed time with just my kids.

Its a tricky situation, because you really have no idea how you will be feeling after you have the baby. The new baby may be an absolute dream at 12 weeks or the other hand.... I don't really know what to suggest tbh, sorry!

Thanks everyone, think i am swaying towards the easy life! my son is finding it hard sharing me already so imagine it would be very difficult for him as well. Will try to make a decision after the festivities!

newcm - I'm 14 weeks pg and first of all thought I'd be taking 4 weeks in total and then decided to take 3 months off and feel much better for deciding that. I WISH I could afford to have longer, I really do but I just can't so I'll probably have 2 and bit months after baby is born and then back to it. £60 a week IS a lot of money if you think of it as a monthly figure like I always do but if you can afford it, take the extra time off!

Good luck whatever you decide
