I had to close today because of the floods

I couldn't get any staff in - the police had closed all the roads

So I rang around and canceled everyone

Most mum/dads understood that I couldn't do anything because of the potential flooding

But one lot of parents was really hard on me - I know it was because their plans for the day were compromised - but I didn't close willfully I took advise and closed for safety - I mean we were practically an island in the floods of '53 and the children might have been stranded here (some were still on breast or formula milk - so without supplies it would have been foolish to care for them)

I very rarely let people down and feel sad that I was blamed for this closure - I was threatened with notice by this family

thats awfull katymac

Katymac · 09/11/2007 20:57

But there weren't lots of floods by me (in the end) i only did what the police man told me to

So I do understand why they were cross

You were probably in a no win situation, the parents would have found something to complain about if you did open and they couldn't get to collect their children because of flooding!!

I hope you have a better weekend.

Tan1959 · 09/11/2007 21:09

Cheer up Katymac - sit down and have a glass of wine (if you haven't already) There's just no pleasing some people!

I sympathise with you;
I had D&V on Wednesday just after last mindee was collected; although only lasted for about 5 hrs at most (was only sick once), I obviously closed on Thursday (only been ill 3 times in 3 years); As a result, words were exchanged between a particular newish parent and I, I felt their comments were unfair, told them I didn't think I was the childminder for them so they duly gave me notice. God what a relief I have always got on with all my parents really well and to have one that you don't particularly gel with, I have found really hard but I was so relieved that I poured a glass of wine almost in celebration!

maximummummy · 09/11/2007 21:10

jeez some people/parents will moan whatever you do if they don't get their own way

just remember this they need you more than you need them

hopefully

Katymac · 09/11/2007 21:13

Poor you Tan (not seen you for ages - how are you? - feeling better I hope)

I hate having children I don't gel with and parents I don't understand/get on with

It is perfectly possible to have a business relationship - it just seems much harder

Mumlove - I probably wouldn't have won either way

Now I just need to wait to see if they arrive next week or if I have actually been given notice

Oh Katy If they give notice I can honestly say you're better off without them!! You did what you had to and as has already been said, there's just no pleasing some parents!!!

Tan1959 · 09/11/2007 21:21

Hope they do arrive for you next week Katymac.

I am fine thanks, just been very busy and seem to have so little time these days to come on here but have been trying to catch up recently

looneytune · 09/11/2007 21:22

And yes....Tan, how the devil are you???

Tan1959 · 09/11/2007 21:27

Hi Looneytune

I'm good thanks - well I'm sat here, had a lovely soak in the bath, have my feet up, catching up on here and a glass of wine in my hand; what could be better

Katymac · 09/11/2007 21:39

My newest lady (who starts on Monday - but has already booked herself on ICP, 1st Aid & food hygiene courses) attended her 'Do you want to be a childminder course' yesterday

She explained that she was going to work for an existing C/Mer in XXX village

Oh said the tutor "that's Katymac......isn't she a wonderful C/Mer and isn't her playroom lovely"

Goodness me I was embarrassed

She also said new lady would have to be very good & work very hard to get up to my standards

Just what I needed to hear after such a crap day today (I can't stop blushing)

ahh bet that makes it all worth it
i've looked on your profile and playroom does look great (i have same little school chairs so sweet)

Katymac · 09/11/2007 22:15

I'd forgotten they were there - I put some new ones up

It does make it better (still upset about the family tho')

I didn't realise you were so close to the sea Katy. If police said to close, then you do as they ask - if parents have an issue with it, they should take it up with the relevant authorities. From the news reports we get down-south, it sounds as if the water got within 20cm of the defences, so it is not surprising that the authorities were taking action.

With parents who moan, just pass the buck - it wasn't your decision, you didn't close the roads. Get the parents to moan at the Environment Agency and local authorities involved in flood defence. I'm sure the flood defences could be increased another few feet, if the parents have several million pounds they want to spend

Sounds like you are a celebrity in childcare circles in your are Katy... Tutors knowing what your playroom looks like - you are famous!

Katymac · 10/11/2007 09:25

We are in the broads - which are connected by tidal rivers

Round here the sea front was not too bad - but the broads really got hit

One parent was flooded - all the local school (east) closed, all the west ones stayed open - I was right on the edge, so it was borderline (which I guess is why they were cross)

The tutor was in the next county [proud emoticon]

oh katy your playroom really is gorgeous puts mine to shame!!! Is it JUST used for childminding?

Katymac · 10/11/2007 13:31

No way

I sew in there, DD plays in there (weekends & evenings) DH does his choreography there & dance practice

When we have people in we kinda cover everything and eat in there
