How did you find you best and worst nanny?

I have used both agencies and advertising on the Gumtree and Nannyjobs. All the nannies I have employed have come from either Gumtree or Nannyjobs and not through agencies. I have found that many nannies who reply directly on the adds are the same ones shown to me from agencies.

The big drawback with using your own advert is that you have to sift through a lot of unqualified/unsuitable candidates yourself which can be time consuming, but I have found that the information I got from all the major central London nanny agencies were not particularly more insightful anyways so I felt their fee was way too expensive. Also, certain agencies which I will not name have a tendency to prop up the expectation on wages which mean its always more expensive to hire through them even net of agency fees.

I've just had a fab experience with TLC Nannies. They're based in Surrey but cover London too. I was looking for a part-time nanny so had v little luck on nannyjob or gumtree, but for full time it should be much better. Approach people directly via their CVs on nannyjob rather than hoping everyone will respond to your advert. I don't know whether cost is a huge factor or not for you, but if the agency you use is VAT registered, it makes a big difference to the fees (well, 17.5% difference! doh). TLC aren't registered. Other people have recommended KiwiOz, who have lots of West London candidates.

Good luck.

Furzella · 19/10/2007 14:40

Doh, stupid me should have read the thread better, didn't realise you were a nanny. Sorry! I'd still recommend those agencies. KiwiOz don't just have Kiwi / Oz nannies.

nanny1974 · 26/10/2007 11:26

What are eden nannies like are they any good

neilp · 26/10/2007 15:04

Recommend Wimbledon Nannies and Surreychildcare. Have had experience with lots, but these are the only ones that communicate.

nannyL · 26/10/2007 18:23

The only agency that I recommend is
hyde park international

nannyj · 26/10/2007 20:36

Kensington or occasional and permanent have been good agencies for me. Eden i wasn't that impressed with to be honest but everyones experiences are different.

Becky11 · 26/10/2007 22:13

I second Surreychildcare. Fab babysitting service too.

Nettee · 28/10/2007 11:17

As a parent with not very much experience but a little bit I would say that nannyjob is good when the nanny replies to the parents advert not so much the other way around. I found a full time live in nanny that way when the agencies were useless. Now I am looking for a part time mothers help in a rural location and so nannyjob is not very good but the local agency has been fab. Neither time in London I am afraid so can't advise there. Don't have any experience of Gumtree.

krabbiepatty · 28/10/2007 11:19

Nannyjob and Gumtree are good but sifting takes a lot of work. If you make an effort the candidates are as good as agency candidates in my experience.

Littleones London is good. They have both permanent and temporary nanny staffs. If you are looking for a daily nanny and not someone who would come in regularly, Royal Nannies is good.

You could also look for in Gumtree. However, since they might be independent nannies you might or might not get good service. If you go through agencies, they have a hold on the employees and so you will get good service. Else the reputation of the agencies is at stake.

Another factor to consider is your cost as well. With independent nannies from sites like Gumtree, you might get for less cost. With agencies they might charge more per hour. So, you can handle it by going for daily nanny from agencies. You think about all the factors before choosing one.

Warning, "System Straub haushaltpersonnel Hamburg"
I strongly do not recommend this agency to any nanny. They falsely claimed that they had a job for a friend of mine, paid her travel from abroad, job was to start on the 29th, on the 19 all confirmed again regarding minor details and on the 23rd they breached the agreement and left her stranded there. She is still stranded. Disgusting.
