Help - have I made the right choice ?

DH and I have just offered a job to a Nanny part time to look after DS2 10 months sole charge and DS1 school holiday care and after school.

I have suddenly had a mad panic about whether this is the right choice and whether the baby in particular will be safe and well cared for.

The lady we have employed was great at interview and has good experience but is the only one I looked at.

I think I am probably just having a guilt trip but can anyone put my mind at rest please....

Have you throughly checked her references

ie so you know it isn't one of her friends or family

Did they answer the questions:

Would you hire her again?

Would you tell your best friend to employ her?

What were her 5 most irritating habits?

What were the 5 best things about her?

Why has she left?

good luck

Without knowing anything about the person you have interviewed, it is very hard to give an opinion about if that person is right for your family.

Being a nanny who works for a family with 4 children (aged 5 months, 3 yrs, 4 yrs and 9yrs) I can say that your DS2 is highly likely to be safe and well cared for. Your nanny will have an easy time, with only one child to care for during school hours... and your DS2 will enjoy having someone at his beck and call.

You interviewed one person - you liked them, got on well with them, felt they would fit your family, and your children have met them and felt the same. You have followed up references, checked paperwork, etc. All is looking great, for that perfect start... but you have worries... it's normal. Anyone leaving their child with someone else for the first time, will have worries. But over the first few weeks/probation period, you will get more of a feeling that you made the right choice... your DS1 is of an age where he can tell you what happens after school, how he feels.

Time will tell if you made the right choice. The choice for now has been made, so stick with it... see how things go during the probation period. And of course, if you have any questions about nannies... do post them here at Mumsnet.
