North London. Hour in the morning, two hours in the afternoon. Any idea what the going rate is likely to be?

Au pair living with you?
Live-out person?

Live-out rate can be tricky as the hours you need may well mean she/he can't do another substantial job - so rate will have to take that into a/c. Not less than £7/hr (net) I'd say, but wouldn't be surprised if people were asking up to £12/hr, just because of the opportunity cost issue.

Au pair much easier for these circs, if you can house them.

I know. I don't think we can squeeze another person in. When we move - whenever that is - I'll go down the live in au pair route.

In the meantime....

Anyone used any good agencies?

We used KiwiOz and found someone delightful. But they were really only interested in handling our position if it was going to be someone's principal job (& obviously if we were going to pay accordingly). Worked for us because our nanny does min. 4 hours daily, & full-time during holidays, so term-time rate (which otherwise looks like enormous hourly rate) includes an element of pre-pay for the holidays ... all a bit complicated. You could give KiwiOz a call, they seemed to be very familiar with this.

But if you really only want someone for max 3 hours a day I would think you are better off with gumtree or the Register-which-used-to-be-Simply-Childcare or a notice up in a local language school ... etc. There is an agency called "After School Nannies" but I haven't come across anyone who's actually got anywhere with them.

Thanks. I've tried gumtree and got the usual stream of responses to wade through. I got my last nanny through there and she was totally fab.
