Car seats / booster seats

mummykench · 21/08/2007 12:47

Hi all, can I win the prize for the most boring threads started please?

Does a 4 year old need a proper car seat or is a booster ok?

Do booster seats have same safety guidelines i.e. when getting second hand make sure under 5years old and not been in any accidents, or is it more lenient? I don't think I would ever buy a second-hand car seat but am more likely to buy second-hand booster.

TIA

I'd say a proper seat

mummykench · 21/08/2007 12:49

Highback booster recommended until at least 6 /22kgs although a booster is legal.

My ds is 4 and no way would he go in a proper 4 point harness seat!! From 4 they can go in a booster seat (with a back) but I'm not sure about the booster just for them to sit on (backless)?

bonkerz · 21/08/2007 13:09

I use booster seats with the adjusters that go across the waist to hold the belt in correct position for my 4 year old mindee. She sits fine but then is a heavy set girl! My other 4 year old mindee is tiny and still in a booster with a back.

NAB3 · 21/08/2007 13:10

Proper seat. Booster cushions are crap, imo. A seat witha back gives more support.

Shoshable · 21/08/2007 13:11

I have high backed boosters for all my 4/5/6 year olds, have the nania ones , each has their own one with the names on, (they argue over who sits where)

I have been thinking about naming my car seats. Same reason! Any ideas how too?

Oops. A bit keen there.

Shoshable · 21/08/2007 13:13

Velcro, get some wide iron on, write name on one bit iron other bit on cover.

mummykench · 21/08/2007 13:16

I thought you meant giving the seats names like "Barry the Booster"...

So where can I get these backed boosters - and would it be ok to get one second hand? Thanks for the ebay link Shosh.

got mine off ebay, delivered really quick think it was a ebay shop, baby4u or something like that

looneytune · 21/08/2007 13:20

Oh sorry, if you meant booster cushion as in with no back, NO WAY, I'd never use one of those unless they were more like 8/9 (and only if they use them anyway, if I could I'd stick with a back booster).

Shoshable - that link is FAB Thanks, I'm going to bid. I have 5 under 5 soon and I'd like to get a seat in time for then without costing £70!!!

looneytune · 21/08/2007 13:21

Jacqui - if you want to bid on that seat, go ahead as it's your thread

looneytune · 21/08/2007 13:21

meaning let me know and I won't!

meandmy · 21/08/2007 13:22

woolworths have got high back booster seat for 9mo+ £25 (ladybird) couldnt find on site but have seen it in our large store, similar to one in argos

mummykench · 21/08/2007 13:23

No go ahead - I'm broke this month and in theory won't need it for a few weeks. They undoubtedly appear quite often on ebay.

Mine are two years old and still going strong, also have the same seats but with the 5 point harness for my 2/3 year olds and the nania 0-4 seats for my babies.

Shoshable · 21/08/2007 13:27

Another place for low cost car seats is Costco (so I've been told by a childminder locally to me, she spotted Nania seats there on a visit recently). Don't know if they are a regular stock item, but if you have a Cash&Carry membership, worth visiting to check, as savings can be 40%+ on Argos prices.
