Au pair bank account

Our relatively new au pair asked last night if we could write her a letter to help her open a bank account. Is this usual? She's our first ever au pair so not done anything like this before.

If it's normal, what should we write in the letter? Are there any concerns with writing the letter? TIA

What does she want you to write? That she is staying with you so will use your address?

I believe so - confirmation that she's lives at our address & is our au pair. Not much else we could write really.

Yes we had to do this for most of our foreign au pairs to confirm they were based at our address

We wrote a letter too and provides a copy of our council tax bill. Hsbc was the only bank she was able to open an account with.

Thanks both - apparently she asked in HSBC on Friday & they've said they'll open one for her. Not sure if she's tried anywhere else actually but as long as it's legitimate & not dodgy in any way, then happy to write the letter. Thanks all!

Might be too late but get her to open a Monzo account. They’re a new online bank that you run off an app - we’ve just done it for our AP and it was super easy - she just needed to take a photo of her passport and upload. I think she got the account and card within 2 days...

I might look into that as she's been into HSBC 5 times & each time they've not opened it as she has needed something else! First time it was a letter from us, then it was a letter with our phone number, then it was a bill, then it was a council tax bill - each time she's gone in taking what they asked for last time & come away empty handed with a request for something else!

Yes, our aupairs opened their bank accounts with HSBC. They will need to make a prior appt and bring their passport, a letter from you confirming they are in UK as an aupair living with you, and 2 recent utility bills in your name showing your address.

It is so much easier once they have opened their bank account as I can then pay their weekly pocket money into the account by standing order.

What a total faff when there’s competitors doing it so much more easily. I seriously wouldn’t bother with any of the high st banks any more!
