Does anyone here leave for work before their year 7 leaves for school?

Just trying to get my head around this before September.

DS going into year 7 in September. He needs to leave for school after I need to leave for work. I assume this is fine to leave him to lock the house and I just need to trust him to get himself out the house and to school?!

I've lost all perspective, things seem to be changing so fast at this age.... is this ok and do other people do this?

I have done this, and DS is in year 6. He needed to leave after me for his year 7 transition days. He has been on his own after school for well over a year. No dramas!

He's v sensible. I may allow my youngest do the same when he starts uni.

The responsibility did mine a world of good tbh.

Thanks. After school not an option for us at the moment as I would be getting home 2.5 hours later than him, 5 days a week which I think is too much.

Wasn't sure if the responsibility to leave the house and get himself off on time was too much at this age.

we've been practicing this in year 6 for the last few weeks as I trusted the school to call me if he didn't arrive v quickly.

He hasn't forgotten to lock up yet but he is generally quite reliable. I'm make him text to say he has left and locked the door - which I won't do forever, its just whilst we are habit forming.

@grasspigeons I might follow suit and get him to do this for the last couple of weeks of term. Thanks

What will you do about after school then? I think you'll be surprised how much he will grow up over the summer. I think he'd be fine at home after school in secondary school.

I have the same issue. Ironically with my 14 year old! It depends on whether she has had time to do her make up ring friends etc. Year 6 child better he actually asks her if she's locked up!

After school he will be going to childminder's for first term at least. He is only just 11 and has some difficulties.

I did this with my daughter when she was in year 6. There were no problems. I used to set an alarm to tell her when to leave
