Anyone in here doing an NVQ2 in childcare?

Anyone? I have a dilemma which i am trying to sort.

Want to be a nursery nurse but dont have a nvq at all but have done loads of other training. Have found a company that is will ing to pay for a student and train me up and they think that i can do an nvq in 6 months and then nvq 3 in another 6 months, menaing that i could be nvq 3 in a year.

In preparation can you tell me what sort of stuff you leanr in a nvq 2 and 3 and what coursework you have to do?

for level two its the basic stuff organising activities, food prep, talking to parents, toileting and nappy changing etc
waterstones do really good nvq2 book in eyce, theres not much prep you can do as it is a learn on the job qualification you will need to record everything you do and where possible get staff signatures to proove youve done it as everything needs doing several times have you seen the standards? as they are basically the list of things you have to cover if you have these you could start the questions, if you keep on top of the written work you can do it easily in 6months! took me nine but i was sooo slack on the written work good luck if you need any help give me shout! ps getting nursery policies an accident forms, perrmission forms, admin forms will be great help, diet lists remember confidentiality so delete with sticker/tipex where poss on copies with names on an state you have done that for that reason! be prepared to do the not soo nice jobs first its how they test your want for the job good luck again Joanne

Thanks, have done all the planning as i was a reg childminder for 18 months. Initially they thoug i could walk into a nvq3 not 2 but the provider has said i have to do 2 even thought i have covered it. Sounds very silly.

Have you done 3? Whats the difference?

I was reccomended by OFSTED to do NVQ level 3 (which I did and have certificate for), parents don't even know what an NVQ IS never mind anything else.

I think we should get minimum wage but parents cannot afford to pay it, OFSTED expect us to be teachers in EYFS but why? We don't get paid any extra for: courses done in own time like Nursery nurses and after school club workers, all the planning, paperwork etc that I expect of us and they want OUR houses looking like a nursery.

Excuse me but CMs are chosen for the homely atmosphere are they not? If we do obs, assessments, planning etc where is the quality of care going? If parents want that they take their children to a nursery. I am seriously considering leaving cming due to increased workload and doing something else.

I am trying to be a nursery nurse in a nursery not still as a minder. I can not afford to stay minding so i have to go and work in a nursery. Shame but life must. The job i am going for will pay about 11k but will train up so want to do it quickly so i can get a much better pay sooner rather than later.

mum2luke i'm an after school worker and aren't getting paid to do extra courses. all the work involved in my nvq is unpaid and half of it seems to have been written by someone with a degree in waffling.

If you have done other training and some experience with children why dont you go straight into NVQ3 ?

I have been working at a playgroup since January and am doing an NVQ3 ( have two children of my own), no previous work with children other than a volunteer at playgroup and school . Hope to finish within a year then go onto Foundation Degree.

The course work is work based so you eveidnce what you do in your workplace. Alot of it is common sense and probably what you are doing at the moment , alot of reflective accounts. They seem at the moment in NVQ to go with quality of work rather than quantity.

Check out your local council Early years to see if they are offering grants etc . My NVQ is being paid totally by council and expenses covering books , stationary etc.

Thanks sniff. I already have a i would say good deal of knowledge but can you recommend anything i can do in preparation before i start the course?

wont be buying books but if you can advise on one it would be good.

Sorry just read your post about your provider requiring that you do NVQ2 first.

Perhaps have a look round at other providers and speak to your Early Years at council.

there is money out there as Government want childcare workers to be better qualified .

The poistion i am going for provides training and will fast track it as i do not want to still be doing an nvq at 31. That is the reason why i dont want to go to college in the evening as it would take such a long time.

The work place were quite happy for me to do 3 but the provider wants me to do 3. Quite why i dont know.

Have done over 20 other courses relating to childcare and they knew that.

Hi JellyJelly, I can't answer your questions, but wanted to ask you a couple of you don't mind ?

The company who are taking you on ? Are they a national chain or just local to your area ??

Also how old are you ??

My reason for asking, is that I have been trying to find a similar position, where someone will train me up, but at 28 they are all telling me i am too old.

I dont mind you asking. i am 29 in a few weeks. I went in to an agency said what i wanted to do and what experiance i had and got an interview. They initially wanted a nvq3 but said that i could be a trainee if i started and then on the second interview they said i had to do 2 and 3.

They are a small but national company. Have you thought about going into an educational agency?

I was a registered childminder, but that was about 5 years ago now.

Hadn't thought of an agency tbh as I just assumed they'd want qualifications, but will certainly look into it now you have said.

The problem seems to be that the nursery's aren't bothered by my age, but they only get funding for up to age 23.

I havent heard that about the funding at all. I have done lots of aqualification whilst i was a minder so much so that i have done about 23 courses on various things.

Did you do any courses whilst you were minding?

Have you called up any nurseries to see if they have student places and do it that way.

Just realised it has been 7 years since i did the childminding, not 5.

But anyway, no I didn't do any courses whilst i was childminding.

I have rung about 6 or 7 nurseries advertising trainee posts now, and they all say that they want either 16-19 yr olds or under 23's.

Re the age issue - I'm 40 and having only started a childcare setting and training since January. The local authority jumped at the chance to fund me.

Is age really an issue out there with childcare workers ?
