Own TV for au pair - is it necessary nowadays?

We have our second au pair arriving on the weekend and I am now getting everything ready for her. She will get the second largest bedroom in the house with a comfy chair, table and decent bedroom furniture. I am now wondering if we should get her a TV! Our previous au pair did not want a TV, he just used netflix on his laptop. I am just thinking, with the way that TV watching is going - do people now provide a TV at all to an 18 year old? I am wondering if I should wait until she arrives and ask her if she wants one - how do others do it?
Thank you!

I brought my own laptop, same as your previous au pair - I've never had a TV in my room at home, so certainly didn't expect one as an au pair! If you already have a TV handy to put in her room, certainly offer it to her (she might prefer to have the countertop space!) but I wouldn't say run out and buy one immediately.

I think it's pretty basic and yes I would definitely provide one.

I'd expect a TV. You can probably pick one up quite cheaply. It doesn't need to be 56 inch 3D Smile

I'd wait and ask - we use the TV in our rented house, but only to plug the xbox into - not for watching actual TV. We all have ipads/laptops to watch TV on.

Thanks all. Think I will ask her if she wants one after she has arrived.

I'd think I'd ask. A few years ago I wouldn't have hesitated to say, yes of course, but these days we rarely watch live tv. We watch Netflix or iPlayer etc.

Mushroom, these were exactly my thoughts too. Thanks!

Ours has one. I'm not sure how much our au pairs use the tv though as they watch things on their computers alot.
