My Ap joined us in Sept and is with us for 2 years (she has just said she would like to stay until July 2008).
At Christmas she went home for 2.5 weeks I paid her pocket money but not her airfare (she had only been with us for 3.5months) I have now just booked her flight to go home for all of August and as she hasn't a credit card I have paid for it (£250), I reckoned that I should pay for her flight but only give her 50% pocket money for the 4 weeks she is away. Do you think this fair or should I try to stump up the full pocket money as well as flight. (money I may add is in short supply as I'm a student teacher!)Any thoughts on this would be much appreciated she is lovely but I don't want to take advantage.

Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

I think it's very nice nice of you pay her airfare. Nicer than I would be.

So, are au pairs normally entitled to 4 weeks of paid holiday like an employee? Do you give her bank hols as well?

What have you actually agreed on?

daisy26 · 30/03/2007 15:09

gee that's well generous, didn't realize families paid for au pairs flights, unless they were rich hehe

I'm sure the AP isn't expecting you to pay for her flight so anything would be a bonus.

How about you say your paying for half of flight & would she like to work a few extra hours every week for 12wks or you take £10pw off her weekly pocket money for 12wks???

Well thank goodness I'm not being mean (I wasn't too sure where I was going to find the extra money anyway!!) I think I will give her 50% pocket money as planned (it will also be her birthday) and she has been so reliable and kind with the boys that i can handle 1 flight a year (also she will be away when we go on holiday so that at least saves me having to find the flight/holiday for her to come also we are keycamping so that could have been a bit too full on!!!!)
Now all I need to do is get a job at the end of my course and all should be well!

Oops I forgot to answer your questions, nothing has been agreed properly I just said I would sort the flight out now and we would have a chat later, also she lives 8 hrs from Bucharest airport so going home takes a fair bit of effort so she had weeks over Christmas / new year and a month in the summer, I know this is far more leave than some but I'm on holiday from college and to be honest having the space is quite nice
