Hi,

I have been reading the thread on babies and must say that my 10 month mindee and me go with the flow etc, there are groups on that maybe we might take more notice of now, but also I have a 3.5 year old mindee and I have heard you mention doing things like cornflour? what is that?

I have made play dough and was really impressed, and luckily so was he, baby not so - but what sort of things is messy play.........

We do have very varied days, we go out lots to the beach/story times etc etc etc, but sometimes you just like to throw in something new dont you.....??

What do you do in this respect - what fab things could we be doing in and around the house, out on walks rather than just walking etc - what games do you play... I am not a mum and just need some ideas to make it more fun........I truly adore the kids I mind and just want them to have a good time.

Thanks for any help.

Madge

Messy play can be a tray of cooked pasta, rice, couscous, or baked beans - anything edible that babies/toddlers can safely explore with their hands & mouth.

Cornflour & water makes a delightful thick gloop - when you spoon/pull across it you can see the bottom of the bowl/tray for a moment before it all fills up again.

Walks can be a great conversation starter - with young babies I keep chatting about what we're doing; pointing & talking about anything of interest on the way (dogs/postmen/builders etc). When they are a bit older you can make games like taking it it turns to choose which direction you will take or take a bingo type picture card or written list of things to spot. Or a carrier bag/box to collect natural objects for gluing together when you get back.

How about painting or sticking with craft stuff so they can take it home to go on mum / dads fridge?

dmo · 31/01/2007 09:39

i'm doing colours at the mo
yellow is this week so we have done gluing and sticking bits of yellow things to paper
i've made yellow playdoh
we ate sweetcorn yesterday
bananas this morning
when out and about i point out yellow things such as cars, doors etc

this can be done with younger children as they do take it all in, my mindees are:
9 mths
1yr
18mths
20mths
2yrs

all different days

ayla99 - couldn't help but laugh when I read that you point/look at anything of interest (which I do as well) ... but I did have mucky thoughts when I read that you look at builders!!! Do you do any kind of competition for the best "builder's bottom"???!

... no way! Am already wording tomorrow's diary entries in my head ... "went for walk and saw some builders, went back time and time again for a better look" ...

Sorry madge7 ... we are lowering the tone of your very sensible thread!! In reality, we'd stop and chat to the very nice builders and talk to them about their very interesting jobs.

LOL TP, actually its the postman who's worth looking at!

We were keeping an eye on some building work in a neighbouring street. When we first went by they were laying the foundations & I got the mindies guessing what they were going to build. We kept going back to see the work in progress. Only it hasn't progressed at all. Thus I have devised a new topic - budding designers in my care will hopefully draw pics/build junk-models of what they would build on the plot.
