I had my last inspection in October and was told by my inspector that it was now an Ofsted requirement for all childminders to register with their local environmental health dept.
I have filled out the questionnaire that my local dept have sent me and was told yesterday when I rang them again that as I prepare more than just fruit snacks I will be having a visit from an inspector soon. They will ring me to make an appointment to come around.

Yes of course I will. I am guessing it will be hygiene and cleaning methods and routines (Oh no - I will have to clean inside my oven now won't I!)
Food cooking/warming/freezing/defrosting.
Apron wearing, hair tying back maybe - if it's long.
Hand washing facilities (best to be separate I think if you don't have a dishwasher)
I have just bought a little mini-fridge for my mindees sole use as I often struggle to fit all their bottles and home packed food into my own fridge. Dh thought it was for his beer!

I did my basic food hygiene just over 3 years ago too so will probably have to do another one.
How do you wash your different coloured cleaning cloths? Do you have a bucket with detergent for them all to go into before washing?

Thanks! I hadn't thought about using the dishwasher - that's a useful tip.
My kitchen floor is concrete and old tile dust at the moment - it's about to be re-tiled, so I've got few days off cleaning it. I'm just giving it the odd cave sweep.

Well I'm sure I would never remember to record fridge and freezer temps. My fridge temp must vary loads with all my teenagers always opening it. Maybe I need a padlock.
It actually has a green 'OK' sign inside it which is supposed to signify that it's at the correct safe temp.
I wipe down with ecloths or clean one-use t-towels that get bunged striaght into the washing machine. Maybe I need a transitional bucket

As I understand it, district councils (by law) have to register us all as "food premises" but, until they decide how they are actually going to do it, we don't have to worry.

I had my inspection visit this morning.
It was fine and very useful.
Make sure you do a thorough written analysis of all your food safety control measures, from shop to your own waste disposal, before you have a visit.
Apparently because we are domestic premises we have to have 24hrs notice of any subsequent visits, but if we are classed as low risk then we may only have to complete a checklist in the post in the future. HTH
