Do you always give cash to nanny for Christmas?

I have a new nanny and am already thinking about her Christmas pressie/s - i know people typically give a week's salary (in her case, £300 - she is live in) - but what do you guys suggest? do you think lots of presents equal to a week's salary, combination of cash + little nice pressies or just plain cash with just stocking fillers be the ideal present? I have to add that I really like her but don't want to go completely OTT

If she comes from abroad

Pay for her to fly home for christmas

One of the families I lived with/worked for in Canada paid for me to come home for christmas/new year as a surprize pressie

OMG a week's salary!!! For Christmas? Honestly? I had no idea!!! I was going to give a nice thouhgtful gift from the LOs, and a wee cash bonus, not a bloody weeks wages!! Am I mean?

I don't think there is any obligation for a bonus -- certainly not a week's wages. If you have lots of money and can happily part with say £300, then there's nothing wrong with being generous. But, in this day in age when most people don't get bonuses I don't think there is an obligation.

I buy our nanny a Christmas gift. I don't give a cash bonus. She wouldn't expect one.

oooooooohhhh! I spot a potential saving! I have never given a bonus to our previous nanny but read here somewhere that one week's wages is a going rate.....and thought oh lordy have i been a bit mean..and therefore should pay the new nanny one. To be fair, she just started in Oct so i think it would be a bit cheeky if she already expected one. She is from the UK - so no need to fly her anywhere too expensive! I am now beginning to realise Uwila is the source of all that is wise and true so i shall stick to her judgements!

I get a present at Xmas and i think they spend around £100 which i think is generous. I get a bonus on the anniversary that i started work which is over 2 weeks salary but would never expect anything for xmas. In my last job my lovely bosses weren't so well off so didn't expect anything at all to be honest. Nannies generally know how well off the families we work for are, just spend what you can afford or give a half day off, i would love that.

2 weeks' wages! Oh lordy, i really love her, but i certaintly can't afford that....is there a way of finding out what she expects...she is very normal and down to earth but i certainly don't want to disappoint her...

balancingact - I have always found Uwila the font of all knowledge when it comes to nanny queries Except when I was trying to find a Nanny Diary and after searching the archives contacted someone that had made Uwila a diary. However when I contacted her, she no longer makes them . So still no nanny diary!

I have only ever had a cahs bonus at X mas once!

i do always get a really "nice" present though... but i also give my charges and parenst really nice gifts too!

I haven't really heard of one weeks salary being the norm. I worked for 2 families. One gave me a box of chocs and £100. The other bought me some lovely presents and gave me some cash too. Another family gave me gloves and a scarf from Harrods. This was over 10 years ago and I still have them.

Hi, I still receive a cheque every christmas and the 'baby' is now in her 30's. Just waiting to be her Nanny as well !!!

Always pay bonus equivalent to 1 weeks wages + generous gift from dh and I and little trinkets from DCs....we can afford it though and she is fantastic....plus we have 5, aged 5 and under ! So she deserves it !

We will do a cash bonus, one "big" present and a small gift from DS.
