How do I check a nanny is ofsted registered?

Probably being thick ( or massively sleep deprived) but can't work out the ofsted website.

I'm checking certificates, references etc for our potential new nanny - how do I check her ofsted registration is current? She's shown me a registration but it's a few years old.

TIA

You can phone them to check her number is current.

When you register with Ofsted as a Home Childcarer (which is what nannies will register as) you are issued with a certificate. Each year they will be sent an invoice to pay to continue their registration but they do not issue a new certificate - which will be why the nanny's certificate seems to be out of date.

So, as eeyore says, ring Ofsted with her registration number to check that she is still registered.

Can I jump on this thread to check something please?

I am trying to find Ofsted inspections but there are only a few on the site when I know there are more Childminders than that in my area. Why do they not all show up? I am assuming you can't opt out of the report being on the site. Also, how quickly after somebody starts childminding are they first inspected?

For a nanny (home childcarer), once you have seen their registration certificate you can use reports.ofsted.gov.uk to check it is still valid. Enter their registration in the URN box and click search. It will then produce a list, containing a single entry. It has two tabs, one saying Operating Providers and one saying All Providers. To be valid, the nanny needs to be listed under Operating Providers.

For childminders, I don't think the initial registration inspection goes online, so you will just see them listed as an Operational Provider.

Not sure how long till first inspection but I guess it may be 6 months, possibly longer.

Your local authority can provide a list of all registered childminders in your area (it takes a couple of weeks for local authority to be notified about new providers).

Childminders can't opt out of having their reports published on the OFSTED website, but they can opt not to ave their name and address shown, in which case they will still be included in your search results, but with just their registration number shown. In that case, you can ask the CM to show you her/his registration certificate, then look up their report by number. As Cindy says, your LA should also have a list, and some of them have an online version you can use to search yourself.

Thanks for all the info!
