We're interviewing our first ever nanny this morning, for a one day a week post Looking after our year old. what do we need to ask? Any tips? Who suggests gross rate, us or the nanny?

Hope it went well. You say the salary you are offering. Agree a gross rate and make sure nanny understands what that means.

Have you looked into doing payroll / nanny payroll companies?

Whilst there may not be much Employers NI due, as short hours, if the nanny has other income their pay will be taxable, so you will need to make deductions and pay those to HMRC.

Trust your gut instincts, see how they interact with your child.

Hope it went well Misty.
I do one day a week; so PM if any questions.
Yes agree Gross pay as the tax due will depend on Nanny's other income. Her tax code might well change throughout the year.
I had another PAYE job at one stage and HMRC split my tax code.
Holiday is 5.6 days including any BH - that's the minimum you can round up not down.
I wondered if my little one would have trouble adjusting when I first started ,as only one day and a whole week until I see her again. But she has been fine and now knows Florence's Day is Play Day :)

Thank you both; it did go well, we think! She seemed friendly and approachable. Didn't get a chance to play with dd as she decided to have a nap, but is coming back for that.

For just one day a week we're focusing on how well we all relate to each other, and of course what dd is like with her. Though the latter is tricky as she can be funny with anyone unknown.... The nanny hasn't done it formally before.

We'd have to go to the hassle of contacting more people/subscribing to another site if we want to interview anyone else. Can we just go for this woman if it feels ok, without seeing anyone else? We bought the first house we saw! Grin

Relationship is key, you need someone you can get on with.
No problem taking on first candidate you meet, why waste time if they fit your requirements and you feel you will be able to get along with them.
