CM Club: Need help deciding - Wooden Kitchen?

We're moving house very shortly and the new place has a summer house in the garden. I'm going to use this as a big playhouse for the kids, with kitchen play etc in it.

As it's going to be a wooden playhouse, I was thinking of wooden kitchen toys rather than plastic. I've come across this link on ebay and if you look at the picture with all 6 items, I can get all that shipped to the uk for ?180.00 in total.

My questions are:

  1. Is there anything I need to be aware of about wooden toys outside with damp etc?

  2. I really want all 6 items but do I really need them? Would the kids be equally as happy with less?

  3. I think it's very good value for money but please tell me if you've got something else to recommend.

TIA

Hi Looneytune.

The only thing I would say about wooden toys outside (albeit in a playhouse) is damp and pests.

We had a problem some time ago with a unit that was stored in the garage, and somehow, it had collected a number of very small crawling insects that were unrecognisable, but seemed to like the wood. This was a pretty dry garage, so I'm not too sure how it would have done in a playhouse.

If this is varnished, you might be OK.

Good price for what is being advertised, but don't be dissapointed if the novelty soon wares off!

If you wanted a second-hand unit, a friend of mine has a substantial set that came from an afterschool club. I will ask him when I next see him to see if it is still used.

Thanks That's the sort of info I needed.

Right, who has a wooden playhouse then? What have you got in yours?

Ive got a wooden playhouse which i put vinyl tiles down on inside to stop wet feet etc damaging the floor. Inside it I have a wooden bench (with storage inside it) and a wooden table.
There is also lots of plastic kitchen stuff, a couple of little folding canvas type chairs, books and Im scred to look in it any closer cos there could be anyhting in there
I regularly throw out the books, soft dolls & clothing and canvas chairs have just been binned cos although they dont have damp mouldy bits on them they feel wet and smell damp.
The wooden stuff has been in it a couple of years and is fine. I think teh coldness is what causes the problem rasther than actuall dampness but when I got playhouse I resealed all the windows and joins to make sure nothing could get in.

I was going to buy a big kitchen too but have just bought toy bbq set , the half price kitchen in woolworths and some dishes to go with it which came to about £50. I didnt want to spend a fortune cos they constantly change their minds about what they like.

So do we now think I may get away with wooden items in a wooden playhouse?

Wooden items are fine in a playhouse as long as it's fairly well waterproofed, and it's often a good idea to carpet any kind of shed - we have a big shed that is carpeted and also tar-papered on the walls, and it's completely dry.

Just for info, we stock the same range as the link provided by KatyMac in case you need a one-stop shop.... go to Brand Name at www.limiteds.com and then look at Santa's Toys - some items out of stock are not currently showing, but we match the prices you have seen.... just let us know if you would like to order any of these items, and I can order them in.
