I am planning to become a childminder. I am still fully employed so haven't yet started the process but I am aware that we will both need to be crb checked. Mine will be clear but my dh had a conviction for possession of cannabis when he was 23 (15 years ago). Obviously this was when he was much younger and certainly he doesn't do anything like it now (and I've never even smoked a cigarette!!!). I just want to know what the implication of this might be for being a childminder?

Other than knowing that we will be crb checked I don't know how it will be used by ofsted or the council.

Any ideas?

I'm not a childminder, but we do host foreign students for a local language school, and my DH has a 30 year old conviction for ABH. We were up front about it, and it wasn't a problem.

fackinell it isn't really anything to do with being a clean DBS more that it has personal info on it taht I wouldn't want to show a stranger.

On an enhanced disclosure for childminding even spent records are shown.

It should be fine.

DH popped down to the local Police Station yesterday to speak to them and it is closed on Mondays!!! He's going to go today instead.

He has given me some more information though. He went through a VERY bad time with drugs when his Mum died. Well, it was more that he didn't get over his Mum's death (he was living with his Dad as his two sisters were much older and had moved out) and he and his Dad never talked about it.

It manifested itself in the form of drug abuse years later when he was dumped by his fiancée of the time. Even now he never talks about his Mum and has blocked out most of his childhood, he doesn't really remember anything. I wish he'd got some help, but that's not his way.

When he was arrested for possession of Cannabis his Landlord (rightly) kicked him out and he had nowhere to go so moved in with his Dad. That's when he sorted himself out. He ended up helping out the authorities by doing some counseling for youngsters who had drug problems. So a (very small) amount of good came from it.

I just hope that all this will help should there be an interview by Ofsted (which he, of course, has said that he will happily do if required). What he's now worried about is whether there was an 'intent to supply' conviction because he has pretty much blocked most things out from that time...
