Hi
I am wondering what is in your CM contract when it is bank holiday.
I find it hard to work out what is fair or nor fair on this one.
Thanks

As far as I know, CMs are not allowed to charge for bank holidays if they aren't avaialble to work them.

Falconi · 06/04/2014 16:20

Are you a CM or a parent, Flynn?
CMs are self employed and are allowed to charge whatever they want.

I just need to know what is the common sense regarding BH.
Looking for comments fro CMs and Parents.

I am a parent. I know that CMs can charge what they want but Pacey says that CMs should not charge for BMs if they are not available to work them. Seems common sense to me. Surely no-one else who is self-employed can charge their clients for bank holidays when they are

FlynnRyder · 06/04/2014 16:30

...Not actually available to work.

Itsfab · 06/04/2014 16:32

If CM are self employed they are wanting it both ways if they want holiday pay as well, whether it is Bank Holidays or just time off.

When I was employed as a nanny I didn't work BH but I was paid for them.

HSMMaCM · 06/04/2014 16:50

I don't charge and don't work. Some charge and work. Others have a retainer system. We're all different, so no one can really answer your question.

Falconi · 06/04/2014 17:32

Ok let me change the question.

The fee is a flat fee of a few hours a day.
So if BH falls on a contracted day and I am available to work do I charge the same fee + extra because it is BH? And if childcare is not required do I charge the flat free only?

I charge & will work on BH if required but at 1.5 times normal rate (so top-up of half rate to pay) & have a couple of medical parents do quite often work BH. I will however always try & swop days if parents want & I have space (ie 1 mindee is coming on the Wednesday after BH instead of his usual Monday session for normal weekly charge).

Moreisnnogedag · 06/04/2014 17:38

My cm is paid for BH (normal rate) but we have to give six weeks notice if we intend for DS to go on a BH. I must admit I'd be pretty rankled at the idea of an extra fee on top (so much so if it was a choice between two very similar CMs I'd go with the one without such a clause).

Moreisnnogedag · 06/04/2014 17:39

Ah that's different. I'd love to be able to swap it.

PhoebeMcPeePee · 06/04/2014 17:44

Falconi I charge normal monthly fees if a BH falls on a contracted day & I'm not needed to work but If a parent wants me to work to work the BH they pay me extra (ie half rate) usually added to the subsequent months bill.

(Christmas, Boxing Day & NYD I don't charge as I won't work)

Falconi · 06/04/2014 17:53

phoebe that is nice, swapping days, but the contact is for 5 days a week so no swapping possible.

It is such a difficult decision.

I have decided against charging anything for BH if I am not needed (very probable) but a little higher rate if I am needed.

Now Saturdays.
Does anyone work or pay for Saturdays and how much more it costs comparing to a week day fee?

OP posts:
HSMMaCM · 06/04/2014 18:44

I work Saturdays when asked - double time. It's not one of my normal work days.

WhatsTheWordHummingbird · 06/04/2014 18:58

My CM does not charge for any day she is unavaliable to work. That includes all Bhs and her annual leave.

HSMMaCM · 06/04/2014 20:05

That's what I do. Charge for my availability.

Nicadooby · 06/04/2014 20:26

I charge as normal for BH as I am still available to work but ask for an enhanced rate of double time when I do.

If I were to work at sat/sun I would require time and half for it :-)
