Hi, I'm new on here but have heard how useful it is and thought i would give it a go! I am pregnant (first time), due 8 March. I am told that it's never too early to start thinking about childcare for when I return to work (which, after 6 months off on mat leave, will be in 9.5months!!) I live in East Belfast and husband works in Holywood (I am in centre of town). I am not sure whether it's better to look for a childminder or a place at nursery (in either East Belf or Holywood) Can anyone provide advice on this? If nursery- how early do you have to get name down for a place? Also, is there a big diff in prices for each? All help and advice v welcome! Thanks

You have lots of time, so look at both childminders and nurseries. Given that you are not going to need childcare for quite some time yet, nether childminders or nurseries will probably know that they will have a space but it may be useful to go on a waiting list, or express an interest so that the provider can contact you if a place becomes available.

Costs will vary, though I would expect nursery and childminder to be similar. You need to ask providers about what is and is not included in fees. Also find out what happens if you decide not to send your child, or if the provider is closed. Do not assume anything! Some providers will charge full fee, half fee, or no fee, if you go on holiday... it simply varies.

NICMA has a search facility for finding childminders in Belfast.

Family Support NI also has a search facility. This will find childminders and nurseries.

Use both search facilities, plus any that your local council may provide. Get a feel for where providers are located, what times they operate, as that will help determine if you need someone near your home (which is what I would suggest) or near a place of work (if time provider opens does not give enough time to travel to work from home).

Hello Im a fully registered child minder,in Bt5,
I agree with the op I would go and view settings, get a vibe of what you would like you said you live in East Belfast/then I would search for my childcare in that area, because Im guessing the wee ones school care would be in that area it would make sense reason being any friends made would be local
