Babysitter - How to find one ??

SabineJ · 23/06/2006 21:02

DH and myself are desperate for a night out on our own as this hasn't happened ... well for about 2 years. And no family around to give us a hand ...
How did you find your babysitter ? We don't know anyboddy around with a reliable teenager who would be able to look after a 2.8 yo and a 1yo so we will need to try something else than the word of mouth. Is a teenager such a good idea anyway ?
Some tips please, we need to find a way to go out for once !!

I have only ever used teenagers. The first was in my old home. She was the dd of my friend and neighbour who also happened to be my occasional childminder. Her dd was only 14 when we first used her but I knew she had her highly qulaified mother across the street who knew my children well if anythnig happened.

Last year we moved and it has taken until very recently for me to get another babysitter. I am fortuante in that my children are at school and playgroup. I asked in playgroup and one of the women who worked there suggested her dd who seemed to do a really good job.

You could try asking in the local sixth form college if there is a noticeboard wher you could advertise for babysitters. Or ask other mothers in toddler groups/ the park/ etc who they use. Or ask in your local church? Just ideas.

sitters website

you have to join but you know you are getting reliable and proffessional sitters who are thoroughly checked out

SabineJ · 24/06/2006 14:17

Thanks for you comments.
I did try my toddler groups but mums there seems to only have small children ...
The sisth form college noticeboard is a good idea. I will try that.

where abouts do you live?

ssd · 24/06/2006 18:45

yes where are you?

NotQuiteCockney · 24/06/2006 18:47

Ours is the daughter of a friend. You might find some through here, or through local community (our local NCT has an informal yahoo group, which is a great place for referrals). Netmums might also be an option.

another recommendation for Sitters (babysitting agency) we have just started using it thanks to recommendations from MN and they are fab. Everyone they have sent have been totally professional, qualified and reassuring. They are nationwide so worth checking if they cover your area!

lottiesmummy · 25/06/2006 08:10

I'm a "sitter" and the way they checked us out was even better than a nanny agancy, very thorough, if i cud afford to I'd join so I could actually get out lol

ssd · 26/06/2006 07:39

are you me lottiesmum?!!

I'm in the same position!

SabineJ · 26/06/2006 08:36

I live in the Teeside area.
I had a quick look at the website for the 'sitters'. Looks good and my area seems to be covered too !!
Thanks for the tips NotQuiteCockney. I think that one of the problem here is that the NCT is not well mplemented and even the toddler groups can be a bit far between ...
However, there is a childminding group so I will ask them if they would know someone (The daughter of a childinder perhaps ??)
What is Netmums ??
