Advice re childminder assistant

Have just registered a friend through Ofsted to be my assistant. Originally it was more to get her level 3 in Childcare (free via local council) and she was not being paid BUT have been asked by another parent to Increase existing child's hour which will take me to 4 under 3 on one day a week. Obviously I know I can do this variation for continuity purposes but considering their ages I wanted to offer 5 hours paid to assistant but could only pay what I am getting for extra child which is £3 per hour so only £15 ..... She is more than happy with the 'bonus' but how do I stand? She won't earn enough to pay tax or national ins...... Do I have to register as an employee? I have insurance to cover an assistant and have done induction and all parents agree to her...... I've got to pay for her first aid and safeguarding and a study fee of £35 also ........

I think you need to pay her minimum wage as she will be an employee.

Bugger that is no good then looks like she will have to stay a volunteer ( she's happy with that anyway) just wanted to offer her a token. I would only be earning £12 per hour before expenses so can't afford to pay minimum wage or I will be making a loss

What age is your friend? If she is only there to train then technically is she not an apprentice . And I don't think min wage applies to modern apprenticeships . Could be wrong though

She is in her 30s.......... I made a call to the tax office and have been told she can register as self employed as long as she doesn't solely work for me. I have now got to get her to ring ofsted as I work with 2 other minders (not in same house just all work closely) and they will also be using her as an assistant for odd days and trips out...........how does dual registering the same assistant work? Does anyone know?
