I need to increase my rate from £40. I've been at this rate for over a year and was thinking of upping it to £42. That seems reasonable to me but it's 5%. What do you think?

You could explain it to parents as it is, food is more expensive, the cost of energy bills has gone up a lot, if you use any petrol that has gone up too, any activity centres soft plays etc have all gone up. Bread has gone up. Your costs have gone up thorugh no fault of your own, if you explain this to parents in a letter to justify your cost I am sure they will understand.
