babysitter vetting

We've always used either sitters.co.uk for evening babysitting or nannies, but we've no need for a nanny at the moment and our last one is in her school training year so I think she'll be around less and less. We had a spectacular cancellation by sitters last saturday so I've decided to try and get some local babysitters sorted.
DC3 is only 18months so I'm not happy for 6 formers to do it, but I'm been contacted by a few childcare.co.uk people who are available.
I'm just not sure what the etiquette for sitters is.....I've asked for CRB's when they come, but should I ask them to pop round before hand, or just to come 30 minutes before on the day. Should I ask for references too as I would for a nanny.

There is no harm in asking to meet them before hand. I would think a day or so before hand would be best so that you have time to change your mind / finr an excuse not to use him or her if you want to!

I see nothing wrong with meeting them before hand, asking for references, looking at training certificates, crb checks, like you would for a nanny.

Depends how fast you need someone but I expect most local people could pop round at some point over the next week or so.

I had 6th formers- they are old enough to get married or join the army- I'm sure they can manage a toddler! I did however have them around first with DS- I wouldn't do it without.
I babysat as a 6th former- for several families.

If you're leaving your children unsupervised you should carry out the same checks - nanny or babysitter. ID, CRB, any qualifications and references.

OTOH I'd be fine with a responsible 6th former/student.
