What do I need to do to become a childminder?

What steps do I need to take? Would being a qualified teacher turned SAHM qualify me enough or would I need extra training? Am also first aid trained etc

Thanks :)

Hi Dotty, I think you would still have to do the CYPOP5 course - which is more about setting up your business than either childcare or education to be honest. Worth asking your ofsted or your local authority though. The rules are changing as of September so you would come under the new regulations, but I am not entirely sure what that entails for new childminders, even though I only registered this year!

You will have to do the CYPOP5 BEFORE you can register (as of Sept 1st) They are no longer giving you 6 months to do it. I'm going through registration now. I've had to do an info session and a training day with my local authority, and have signed up for my CYPOP5. I have just done a 12 hour Paediatric first aid course (in this area it has to be 12 hr Paed - make sure yours is that if you already have a First Aid certificate). You'll need to register with Ofsted as anyone else would and make sure you have all your insurances in place etc. Your experience will no doubt be invaluable but you will still have to go through the process.

" ... the CYPOP5 course - which is more about setting up your business than either childcare or education to be honest"

That's a really good point. The new EYFS says that "Childminders must have completed a local authority approved training course which helps them understand and implement the EYFS before they can register with Ofsted". CYPOP5 clearly does not do this and yet many LAs are continuing to stipulate CYPOP5 as the approved course.

When will somebody notice?
