I am minding a 6 month old and nearly 9 month old.

I would like to put a treasure basket together - can you suggest good things to put in them?

I'd like to do this F&Z... but what is "heuristic play"?

(I'm a bit like this already though - give DS interesting non-plastic stuff to play with like wooden bowls and loofah!)

FrannyandZooey · 04/03/2006 12:50

You know what it is already then snowleopard :)

Heuristic just means 'learning through discovery', i.e. finding things out for yourself rather than sitting passively and being taught. Providing children with the sorts of natural and everyday materials that katymac lists enables them to play in an open-ended way so they initiate their own learning. All sounds very complicated but in practice is simple - just provide them with interesting objects and leave them to it. You have to supervise of course, but you don't need to otherwise get involved or 'show' them what to do. They can expliore and experiment with the materials from about 5 months and get a huge amount of stimulation from it.

Frannyandzooey
i have a website my husband built for me. He owns UkNetCo. How much webspace do you need?

You might want to contact him direct via my website www.pfcm.co.uk (Then go to the 'contacts' page, if you leave your land line phone number he'll give you a ring):)

Isyhan · 04/03/2006 18:01

Im lost describe to me in simple terms what this is. Do you hide all these things in something or just put them in a pot?

bfcmdr · 04/03/2006 18:09

You put them in a basket, hence the name, ideally it should be round and shallow and not tip over when your baby reaches into it and it is plsyed with with adult supervision,by little ones, although mine is easily accessible for all my children from 15months to 8 years.

alibubbles · 04/03/2006 18:53

frannyandzooey just reminded me that there is a picture of a child playing with a treasure basket on my website. that picture was taken 4 years ago, so childminders have been using them for a while. \link{http://www.think-small.co.uk/activities.html\here}

nikki83 · 04/03/2006 19:05

hi, would it be cheeky for me to ask for you to send me the info on treasure basket f&z??
or shall i wait for you to put on website?
if you can send it then my email address is [email protected] great thanks xxxxxx

lunavix · 04/03/2006 19:07

Thanks Franny, it's a pity you aren't nearer me I'd do the course. Are you doing any for providers as opposed to parents?

Isyhan · 04/03/2006 19:19

Oh cute. Im going to make one for my 6mth dd tomorrow!

FrannyandZooey · 04/03/2006 20:17

Hi nikki, I will send it to you, sure. It's not cheeky at all, I am happt to share the information with anyone that wants it. I have got details of free webspace now so will think about building a website but could take me a while.

Luna, no I have only done sessions for parents and babies so far - I don't know if I am qualified to train professionals, I am only a self-taught mum doing this as a hobby really Blush

bambi06 · 04/03/2006 20:24

ive got bamboo mini pot with lid, wooden spoons, massage hessian type mit, back massager similar to hessian mit, silk purse, shells, foot massager, smelly oils bag, wooden utensil holder from ikea, various boxes amde from different materials.. i l have a look and see what else i can remember.. ooh large pebbles..

FrannyandZooey · 04/03/2006 21:54

I am sure you will all be able to help me with ideas too: I am a bit short of aromatic materials that are safe for the babies to mouth. So far I have got fresh citrus fruit, dried orange slices, dried whole oranges, cinnamon sticks and lavender bags. Any more I could try?

blodwen · 04/03/2006 22:07

I have a couple of smallish plastic bottles full of water with glitter and small silk-type flowers. These are very popular and pretty when shaken.

Katymac · 04/03/2006 23:21

chamoix leather is very smelly
natural sponge with essential oils (need supervision)
Herbal teabags mint chalomile etc.(only good for one suck.....iyswim)
Different types of wood, pine, oak, etc

threelittlebabies · 04/03/2006 23:27

frannyandzoey, if you wouldn't mind, could you email me the info about heuristic play and treasure baskets? I am not a childminder, but have a very inquisitive and active 6mo dd, and think she would love this! TIA

threelittlebabies · 04/03/2006 23:28

Isyhan · 05/03/2006 12:12

mrspink27 · 05/03/2006 20:21

Very excited that for once when I clicked on a linnk to find out more information about classes.... there are several in my area!! HURRAY!!!!!!

will let you all know how i get on!

FrannyandZooey · 05/03/2006 20:36

Mrspink, do you mean you are near me, or is the Nature Play classes that are near you? I would love to hear about the Nature Play classes, the lady Kim who runs them was quite inspirational to me. However when I spoke to her she was in the process of winding them down...I hope you are still able to attend.

mrspink27 · 05/03/2006 22:01

I used to be an essex girl Grin, but now live near the Nature play.... dont tell me i am going to be thwarted again!!!!

FrannyandZooey · 06/03/2006 07:46

Oh no they may be still going Mrspink! Give them a ring, I tend to find when people who work with children say they are 'retiring', 10 years later you can still find them doing exactly the same, saying "ah yes well I thought I would just cut back a bit first" :o

PollyLogos · 06/03/2006 09:20

Frannyandzooey could you possibly send me the treasure basket info too? I am not a child minder (not in UK) but i do some babysitting and think this would be great to take along with me.

Thanks in advance.
