New au pair started- any suggestions how to help her make friends?

We are in SE London and have a young au pair who has just started with us. I really want to help her settle in but as she won't be starting college until September I wondered what I could do to help her meet people and feel less homesick.

Thanks in advance!

Hi,
Yes, tell her to go to www.aupairinuk.com/

I mentioned it to my current au pair when she was over for a trial weekend and before she even arrived to start with us she had got in touch with people via this website and has met lots of friends!
We are in SW London and there seem to be quite a few au pairs locally.

When my lady started, I posted a note in some local mums groups on facebook etc to see if there were any other au pairs in the area. It worked and we managed to make friends with another family and our au pairs seem to be getting on well too!

Which part of SE London?

Zomax · 11/07/2012 22:40

Catford\forest hill\brockley borders. We have just moved here and had a few friends with au pairs in our old area of SE London but it's a bit far and they all seem to have moved on for the summer holidays too.

We're in Brockley and have au-pairs. Our current one may well be leaving shortly, so I won't suggest that as the greatest start! However, there are loads locally. Get her to join the facebook group aupair in London, put a post with her area and she should be able to find them.

Many are leaving in Aug / Sept and new ones arriving so July is a slightly tricky time for making friends.

Sorry we are in Greenwich/Blackheath, so might be a bit far. Your aupair will meet others on the school run in Sept. But in the meantime, there might be summer aupairs she bumps into in the park etc. That might be a possibility.

Sorry - changed my name so a bit confusing here... but blueshoes we used to live in Greenwich and my daughter is still at nursery there so quite close really. Where is your au pair from?

blueshoes · 15/07/2012 22:33

Hungary/Romania Smile

Our au pair is German. She has found someone from the website posted by andagain at the top coming over in a week to Bromley from Austria so is very excited about that. I have no idea how to but will try and pm you tomorrow, if you don't mind.
