Advice needed about au pair driving licence and car insurance

Au pair coming for 5 weeks this summer - French, 19. Will he be allowed to drive on French Driving Licence? (I assume so) but wondered about the implications for insurance if he only has a French licence. I will be adding him as a named driver to my car insurance .

Thanks.

yes he will but be prepared for the cost........and that some insurance companies just wont do it.

Tbh before you promise him the use of a car I would call your insurance company and check it out.

My motor insurers will not add any named driver under 21 to my policy.
What's the insurance group for the car in question?

GeorgeEliot · 01/07/2012 18:42

No idea about the insurance group but it's a fairly ancient Skoda fabia. not worth much.

Good luck.

If you find yourself refused insurance (very common if under 21) you could try switching whole insurance policy to Tesco Value (not the normal Tesco one - they usually refuse). Be prepared to pay up to £1,000 (or more) on top of your normal premium (obviously most of this will be refunded after the 5 weeks, leaving a net cost of maybe £200 after admin fees). Unfortunately value of car is not much of a factor in the calcs when you are dealing with young drivers.

I won't take anyone under 21 because of car insurance issues.

Well have just got off the phone with insurance company and they will only insure if he has had a UK driving licence for 2 years. which obviously he hasn't. so i am stuffed as we live in a v rural area.

Guess I will have to give Tesco a try?
