Whats your worst childcare self-injury?

Whilst dashing about getting nursery duties done earlier this week and feeling impressed with how organised I was, i lunged across the stairgate to grab the laundry basket and miscalculated.... punching the stairgate instead! I am forever bumping into things etc, terrible spatial awareness or something, so I didnt worry too much. But it carried on hurting all week, I look after 3 under 3 so lots of lifting and carrying and whatnot. Two of my fingers were really killing me yesterday and it seemed to be getting worse, rather than better. Got up early this morning and went to the Minor Injuries unit to get it checked out, lots of too-ing and fro-ing, had a few x-rays. Turns out theyre not broken, thankfully, just a bit battered and bruised like my ego!

Whats the worst injury you've sustained in the line of duty?

Shut the patio door so the toddler didn't follow me into the kitchen. Forgot it was shut and ran back into the play room. Massive black eye and whiplash. The door was fine!

I knelt on a tiny Lego brick right on the bony part of my knee - sounds like nothing but I couldn't kneel on that knee for about two months, it was that painful. Not great when your job involves spending most of the day on the floor, playing, changing nappies etc!

Coming down stairs slipped and hurt my back, led there for a few minutes in pain before getting 3 babies sorted for school run, nearly in tears on way to school getting the double buggy up pavements, worked till 6.30pm then when everybody had gone went to a&e where adter xray found i had broke cox bone Sad still didnt take a day off tho but took 3 wks to feel normal again

When I was about 12 weeks pregnant with ds2 - was putting up some Xmas decorations and artwork made by the children and (I know, I know, shouldn't have.....) I was standing on a little toddler chair to reach and I fell off. The slight bleed was checked and I was reassured he was ok but I ended up suffering BADLY with SPD symptoms but plodded on until I was finding it very difficult to walk (I remember pushing the double buggy on the school run with great difficulty). Anyway, when it looked like I'd have to go on maternity leave so much earlier than planned, I decided that I'd risk spending money on seeing an Osteopath and it turned out my pelvis had been knocked out of line from that fall! All got fixed and I managed to continue until my planned ML date!

Fell in the soft play and tore a ligament in my wrist - photos on profile.

Had to have an operation on the bloody thing.

Still causes me pain occasionally now.

I was trying to open the bathroom door when my son got locked in. When the door gave way, I fell backwards down the stairs and broke my arm and got concussion. Luckily, I had put the baby down a few seconds earlier to be able to pull with both hands. I dread to think what would have happened if I hadn't.

When DD was about 2 months, I was changing her, and tickling her. I bent down to blow a raspberry just as she kicked out, and ended up sat on the floor, dazed and wondering what had just happened. She'd kicked me right in the eye, had a beautiful bruise for weeks. Grin

when I was an au pair, my zipped up the coat of my 3y old charge leaning over him as you do. he jumped up giving me a black eye and nose.

I was taking my charges aged 12mths and 3yrs to the beach. The eldest wanted to walk along a wall on the way, i lifted him and held his hand as he walked, whilst pushing double buggy with the other hand. I didn't notice pavement was un even, tripped, but managed to catch the little boy as i fell!! Really hurt my foot! Soldiered on to the beach, where 3 yr old kindly dug a hole in the sand and poured cold sand onto my foot which was swelling up,and bruising badly! we then walked the mile and a half home, with me limping and leaning on buggy for support!! Turns out i had torn a ligament, was on crutches for 2 wks!!!

I got my foot caught under the stair gate walking up the stairs, I was in agony, massive bruise. Didn't go to the doctors until 6 months later a lump appears on the top of my foot.

Apparently I had torn my bone and it had filled with blood. Lovely.

Pretty sure my ds broke my nose when he accidentally head butted me. I cried a lot.

No exactly a self-injury but we were on holiday in a villa with a glass sliding door from the bedroom onto the garden. I nipped inside to the bedroom to fetch something and nipped straight out again, to be confronted with the fact that my toddler had closed the door in that split second. Not sure if nose was actually broken but it certainly felt like it.

I don't know whether this counts! Teaching a 7yo how to rugby tackle safely but effectively (he did play rugger at a club was getting kicked in the face a lot)....he sent me flying first try. I wasn't prepared. It was painful.

Stubbing my toe on the pushchair wheel and breaking it (my toe that is - not the wheel!). Blush

Was out walking on a great big hill. Right at the top I turned to admire the view, put my foot in a tiny hole (and I mean tiny, as in a small, dried out puddle) and felt everything in my foot tearing. It was in slow motion. A feeling of one part after another part of my foot peeling or popping off. It was sickeningly painful. I had a big lad with me whom I had to use as support to hop back down the hill. The 2 other children kept close. Luckily it was my left foot and my car was automatic so I got them all home. Then it took 5 days and seeing 6 different medical people to finally get an x-ray. This showed it was very clearly broken. The bones healed in a few weeks but all the tissues were so ripped that I was off work 4 1/2 months and was then still using 1 crutch. (Also, nearly died when I ended up with the complication of many blood clots on the lungs which had migrated from my foot). Two years later I still don't have feeling in my big toe. --- but honestly you should have seen just how small this hole was!

At an after-school club, a lovely, beautifully behaved 5 boy told me to 'be a burglar' so that he could catch me. He gave me a black eye by whacking me with his torch.

anewyear · 04/03/2012 09:08

Was off work (cm) for 8 weeks with torn ligaments/tendons in right leg after chasing my Landrover down my rather steep drive to stop it from landing in the garden/house oppersite.
had a lovley visit from Ofsted due to how it happened Hmm

SuperDuperJezebel · 04/03/2012 09:57

Wow, you've all done yourselves proud! My injuries seem pretty minor compare to some of these. Ouch!

Getting the guinea pigs out for the girls to cuddle - heavy lid to hutch fell on my head - the metal catch hit first - cracked open my skull! Trip to casualty, 3 hospital stays.... Still have no sense of smell....

eurycantha · 04/03/2012 12:04

I was looking after a three year old .one day I went to open the window, the sash cord broke and came down on two of my fingers. After a quarter of an hour of enorrrmous pain I managed to push the window up,I think with my head. I sat down and I remember the little boy patting my arm saying youll be alright Eurycantha .This little boy has just been posted as a medic to Afghanestan I know hell look after the soldiers as well as he did me when he was mopping up the blood when he was three.
