Getting a CRB check done without an agency

Has anyone tried/succeeded in doing this. I have been looking at the website and it says that parents employing nannies cannot apply for a CRB. I am wondering what you are supposed to do if you have employed somone privately and want them to be checked out.

Don't you get the nanny to apply and then she shows you the record?

not sure - there are 3 new companies doing CRB checks - they have websites - so maybe google them. I think it costs about £50 (we just looked at this for our playgroup staff).

she has been trying to do that quite hard but has hit a brick was as she needs a number of an organisation approved to ask for CRB. Because she isn't signed up with an agency she hasn't got a number.

Get her to go to her local police station with her passport, pay 10.00s for a police check. It will take a couple of weeks to be posted through to her. She can then show it to you. Also she will get a reciept for the 10.00 which you could reimburse.

there are different levels of checks - and it can take months depending on how "traceable" a peron is - ie election roll and such.

there is a website -i dont know what it is though

Nannies should have an Enhanced Disclosure. CRBcheck.info appear to provide the service to individuals, though many providers state that under CRB rules they can't provide disclosures to individuals... so over time CRBcheck may not be able to do it either. It certainly seems to be a service that is needed, so perhaps the CRB themselves will eventually provide the service directly... maybe that's wishful thinking.

A police check such as UCM talks about is NOT suitable for someone who is working with young children. Such a check does not sufficiently check records, to my knowledge it only does a local PNC search. The Enhanced Disclosure from the CRB uses a lot more data sources to confirm idenity and criminal background.

For Playgroup Staff... Although OFSTED no longer provide CRB Checks, the DfES has agreements in place with the following providers:
Capita - www.capita.co.uk
TMG - www.tmgcrb.co.uk
Nestor - www.criminalrecordsagency.co.uk
(Nestor state that Ofsted Registered groups, such as Playgroups do not currently need to pay a fee)

These providers may also be able to provide CRB checks for Employers... best to contact them explaining the situation. As an employer of a Nanny you are classed as an Employer (just like any other), though with only one employee the admin charges may be high.

Thank you nannynick - CRBcheck.info will save the day. I can't believe how hard it is - you would have thought that "they" would have made it easier for parents employing nannies when this was set up.
