As a Nanny, how do you answser: CENSUS 2011: At your workplace, what is (was) the main activity of your employer or business?

So you work as a nanny in a private home caring for children.

Your job title is: Nanny
Simple Desctription of Job: Care for children in their home
Do you Supervise other employees: No
(most nannies don't, though some might)

Now the next question (Question 37) the Census asks is:
At your workplace, what is (was) the main activity of your employer or business?

If you are a primary teacher and you work for a school, the answer is Primary Education

If you are a car mechanic, the answer is Repairing Cars

So for a nanny working for parents... the business the parents are in is? Parenting? Being Parents?

Anyone got any ideas?

I'd go for 'Childcare'. Because they are your employer and in their role as your employers, the employment type given by HMRC is childcare.

If only that were my only gripe with the bloody nosy parker pile of shit census..

ive got the thrill of this to come - asked dh if arrived in post today and he said no, so will wait eagerly for it tomorrow/friday

i assume i would write what they do, ie PR - then again it is none of anyones business what my employers do

nannynick · 09/03/2011 18:36

It's not asking what they do. It's asking what the nature of the business is - the business of employing you.

The nature of the business is 'family home', isn't it? That's why you're there, it's the home of the family whose children you are looking after.

oic nick - sure all will be completely obvious when i finally get mine, not Grin

SuperDuperJezebel · 09/03/2011 21:30

I am going to write 'private/domestic household'

nannynick · 12/03/2011 12:56

So the options so far:

Childcare
Family Home
Private/Domestic Household

Is any one of those better than any other? If HMRC view it as being Childcare, then it makes sense to use that to link it together. Though Private/Domestic Household could well be better to use if the family has other domestic staff.

Private Household is the correct answer.

mranchovy · 12/03/2011 17:26

Childcare is wrong, that is your job it is not the main activity of your employer.
