'mislaid' baby!

I'm gobsmacked. My friend has just told me that when she picked her ds (15 months) up from nursery last night they couldn't find him! They had left him asleep under the slide outside .
Absoulutely appalled that any nursery could be so careless. I want to encourage her to complain but not sure who the governing body would be? It's a private nursery so is that local government?
It doesn't bear thinking about what could have happened.

My god, shocking . Wouldn't Ofsted be the people to speak to?? I'm a childminder and they regulate us!

Yes OFSTED are the right people to talk to. What did the manager say????

Nurseries are inspected by ofsted, so maybe you should try contacting them. I'm sure they'll point you in the right direction if they can't help.

Am going to catch up with my friend tomorrow for full details. Apparently they've been on the phone to her today grovelling apologies.

Definitely complain. And find out how on earth it happened too - somebody should be responsible for each child in the nursery, surely?!

That is terrible. She must complain!

That's nothing I know of worst stories than that. Which is why my child will never be left in a day nursery.

But I thought that the staff were allocated certain children to look after so they all know who's responsible for who??? I'm just so shocked this could happen!!

Er, no it isn't.

She's just really shocked by it all. She's really struggling to know what to do as until she finds another nursery she has to keep sending him there.
We spoke about it today and I think she will ring Ofsted. She's worried about how they'll treat her ds if she makes a complaint.
Apparently the staff looked really shocked when she turned up to collect him (ie. they realised they'd lost him!), then they all spent 10 mins looking for him until eventually he woke up and started crying.
The nursery closes at 6pm - what if she'd been 10 mins late?? Really doesn't bear thinking about.

the local lea is also a likely place to lodge a complaint eventho the nursery is private. the lea gives authorisations to run as well as provide grants for nursery age children.

how terrible, when my DD goes out to play at nursery they count them out and they count them in.

Perhaps if she mentioned it to Ofsted & asked them to do indiscreet investigations rather than specific to this one incident?

Thanks henshake, will suggest that. My ds has a fab nursery so can't imagine how it can happen???
Someone burnt some toast on weds am at nursery and set off the smoke alarm - she came out of the kitchen 30 secs later and all kids and carers were in the garden!! Impromtu fire drill but worked wonders - very reassuring!!

A nursery I know of had a child with a cord wrapped round her neck it actually cut into her neck, the nursery has to fill out a form saying what happened and explain to the parents, lets just say the whole truth was not revealed to the parents. The same child a few days later was given meat, the child is a vegetarian. The nursery decided not to tell the parents about this due to the earlier incident.
Ok the last was not as serious as the first but it still shows lack of care and more lies told.

Nursery staff aren't paid well and because of this amongst other issues they tend not to keep their staff long. A high turn over of staff means lack of care as they will not know the children or really care, if they are only there temping. Alot of nurseries also use students and give students far too much responsibility when they are short staffed.

PennyLane, I don?t think this is the place to slag nurseries. Want to start another thread about that (I could join you)? CCMM is looking for advice about a particular situation not stories about other ?bad? nurseries...

How can that happen? I thought all children had a keyworker? So there is always one individual responsible for the child?

I used to work in a private day nursery (8 years to be precise) and we used to count children in and out from outside play. Thought it would be common sense to do this.

Anyway, agree with all advice given - someone needs to be told about this or what happens next time? Doensnt bear thinking about!

All children should have a keyworker who is responsible for certain children, but again all staff members need to be aware how many kids there are and where they are!

Sometimes the childs keyworker may have left work due to being on an early shift so therefore all staff need to be aware.

The manager should be spoken too!

what was he doing sleeping outside in this weather any way they shud of brought him in to a bed when he fell asleep poor kid he could off being locked in all night

You NEED to report this to ofsted
