Is it possible to get a nanny one day a week?

My DH works 3 days a week, I work 5.
DD goes to nursery 2 days a week and they have no further availability - it's a very popular place. My mum does the other day DH is working but as she has to come up on the train and stay overnight to do this I cannot ask her to do any more.
DH's work looks like it will overflow the 3 days he's supposed to do it so we need a nanny for 1 day, probably 8am-3pm. Is this possible?
I am completely new to this childcare game - I only went back to work 3 weeks ago - so I've no idea what you can and can't do. But it seems nannies like to do 3-5 days (and who wouldn't?!).
Any suggestions hugely welcome.

I'm in London, in Fulham.

Yes, definitely - you probably won't have a vast choice of candidates (and it depends on the day) but I have employed two one-day nannies; each had a 3 day job elsewhere, each time I interviewed I had a choice of a few candidates.
Obviously you are a bit beholden to the main job (the first one left as her main job went to 2 days and I couldn't justify giving her another day) but we have a fab nanny who's been with us nearly a year now. Apparently Mondays and Fridays are the easiest day to get a one day nanny but you never know your luck, it depends on the nanny's main job.
Your hours may be a bit less attractive as you are not offering a full day of work but may suit a nanny with older kids for example?
I have always used a local agency (am in SW London too) but sure you'd get more applicants via Gumtree etc - I just preferred the agency route.

I had a nanny one day a week. She worked 4 long days for another family and just wanted an extra bit of cash in hand to top up her income.

Shouldn't be too much of a problem I wouldn't think. We used www.childcare.co.uk to find our wonderful (part time) nanny.

Good luck!

yes you should easily find a nanny, esp if you can be flexible on which day

looks on www.netmums.co.uk and www.nannyjob.co.uk as well as place an ad on www.gumtree.com

If it's till 3pm you might find someone who has school age children, and have a nanny share (presuming she could do the mornings too.

You're in London where there are always lots of nannies.

If the day you needed was a Friday you would maximise the number of good candidates - ime lots of mums who work 4 days do monday to thursday, so there are more nannies knocking around, so to speak, on a Friday.

We have a one day a week nanny. Student teachers for some reason seem to often have wednesdays off, so that's worth looknig into, also had a lot of interest from trainee nurses (skint and wanting cash) and post grad students ( wasm't intersted in students as wanted someone a bit older/more mature, as our girls are young, but if you were happy with this prob also an option).

Thanks so much everyone, that's really helpful.

I'm looking for Fridays or Wednesdays, so going on your advice I'll concentrate on Fridays. And thank you for all the websites!

Sonic - like you my LO is only 10 months so I'm keen on someone older too, but thanks for the tip!

Yes here one !.Unfortunately Fulham is

slightly too far( London traffic).
I,m looking for 1 day either Mon/Thur or Fri and and am based in the Colliers Wood area.
I have over 28 years experience( crikey that makes you feel old when you see it on paper),very reliable and easy to get on with.I turn up when you want me and leave whatever time you manage to get home.I adore being with children but at 46 find myself with only cats !.
I am CRB checked with a clean driving licence and children's first aid certificate, and I can provide excellent references.
I can also do baby sitting either regularly or on an ad hoc basis.
