Snap!
I had exactly the same.. Contracts signed last weds and a no show on monday!
I got in touch with the parent and requested all my paperwork back including the signed contracts/record forms .. I did this to try to stop them from fraudulently using my ofsted number to claim.
I have since recieved the paperwork and have chalked it upto experience.. Its highly annoying and rude but it does happen.
In future I am taking payment for the 1st day on signing of the contract as a deposit.. Non refundable if they dont show and deductable if they do.
Hope this helps.... :)

sorry this might sound a silly question, but how can your number be used to claim?

They can claim childcare cost.

I dont know how it works but I have had it done to me before.. It was quite clear to me that it was.
Sometimes now the benefit office check up and will phone us to see if we are providing the care.. but this is only sometimes.
I did call the office the 1st time it happened to me, the put a note on the families name but also said they let them have 12 weeks to let them know!
